New Opportunities for Research Funding Agency Cooperation in Europe

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) is pleased to announce that NORFACE – New Opportunities for Research Funding Agency Cooperation in Europe – in cooperation with CHANSE – Collaboration of Humanities and Social Sciences in Europe –open a call for international research projects in the Social Sciences on the topic of “Enhancing well-being for the future”.

The theme can be approached from a variety of perspectives and disciplines in the social sciences. It enables and encourages multi-disciplinarity and provides opportunities for pan-European research integrating researchers from different regions of Europe, and for comparisons across various contexts.

The present call proposes to focus the research on the following themes:

  • Crises, challenges and well-being
  • Environmental challenges and well-being
  • Well-being and mental health
  • Well-being, economy and politics

Information about the call

Project team: Composed of at least four and a maximum of six principal investigators, i.e. partners, eligible to receive funding from four or more different countries participating in the call

Project duration: 24–36 months

Research Funding: up to a maximum amount of €1,500,000 (across all partners)

The Well-being call promotes diversity in research. When building research consortia, applicants are strongly encouraged to take into account the following aspects:

  • Gender balance
  • Academic age balance
  • Geographical diversity
  • Knowledge exchange and impact

Submission of proposals

Proposals must be submitted via the EPSS system (further information on the system can be found at the link below). Additionally, German applicants are required to submit their proposal via the DFG’s elan (identical document). They should note that if they are using the elan system for the first time, they need to set up an elan account by 14 September 2023 at the latest.

Indicative timeline

  • Official call announcement and launch of the submission system: 26 May 2023
  • Deadline for outline proposals: 21 September 2023, 14:00 CET
  • Deadline for invited full proposals: 26 March 2024, 14:00 CET
  • Call results: October/November 2024
  • Earliest start of funded projects: End of 2024/beginning of 2025

Countries expected to participate in the call

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom

The inclusion of Ukrainian researchers is encouraged. Applicants should review the guidance within the national eligibility annexes.

An online webinar will be hosted by the Call Secretariat on 16 June 2023, 10:00–12:00 CET, aiming to answer the questions related to the call.
