Call for Proposals in Quantum Sciences and Technologies

As a participant in QuantERA II, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) is pleased to announce the 2023 QuantERA call for proposals. The funding organisations of QuantERA II jointly support European multilateral research projects with the potential to initiate or foster new lines of quantum technologies through collaborations exploring advanced multidisciplinary science and/or cutting-edge engineering.

Proposals are expected to be aligned with one of the following topics:

  • Quantum Phenomena and Resources (QPR) where the goal is to lay the foundations for the QT of the future. The focus is on basic quantum science and fundamental physics, and the projects should explore novel quantum phenomena, concepts, resources, protocols and algorithms, and/or address major challenges that prevent broad applications of some quantum technologies.
  • Applied Quantum Science (AQS) where the goal is to take known quantum effects and established concepts from quantum science, translate them into technological applications and develop new products. These could be novel devices that are based on known quantum effects and that will serve a novel application in QT, or devices and systems that translate known quantum applications into products and industrial applications.

The DFG participates in the call and will fund only projects addressing the topic of Quantum Phenomena and Resources. With the exception of the duty to collaborate, the regular eligibility rules for funding from the DFG as described in the Guidelines for the Research Grants Programme apply (see link below).

Project consortia must have a minimum of three eligible partners requesting funding in at least three of the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada (Québec), Croatia (tbc), Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy (tbc), Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal (tbc), Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom.

The deadline for submitting proposals is 11 May 2023, 17:00 CET. The full details of the call with a list of the participating funding organisations and the application procedure are available on the website of QuantERA II (see link below). The specifics of submitting proposals to the DFG are described in the annex of the Call Announcement.

Please note that according to a resolution of the DFG General Assembly, as of 1 August 2019, DFG funding may only be awarded to institutions that have implemented the guidelines laid down in the Code of Conduct for Safeguarding Good Research Practice in their own regulations in a legally binding manner.

This means that, also for international proposals, funding from the DFG can only be received if the guidelines for safeguarding good research practice (see link below) have been implemented by the German applicant’s institution.
