DFG signs Memorandum of Cooperation with the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development for the Promotion of Research

(20.12.22) To further strengthen the cooperation between the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) and the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), DFG President Professor Dr. Katja Becker, DFG General Secretary Dr. Heide Ahrens and AMED President Professor Dr. MISHIMA Yoshinao signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC).

DFG-SERB First Indo-German Week of the Young Researcher, New Delhi

(02.12.22) From 7th to 10th November, 2022, the DFG office India together with Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Government of India organized the First Indo-German Week of the Young Researcher at The Lalit Hotel, New Delhi. The event brought early to mid-career researchers from the two countries together to share their research interests and build long-term research partnerships. This year’s scientific topic was Chemistry.

DFG at the 3rd trilateral symposium on Artificial Intelligence (AI)

(01.12.22) At the 3rd trilateral symposium on AI in October 2022 speakers from Japan, France and Germany gathered in Tokyo to discuss measures to tackle planetary challenges that humankind is facing in the Anthropocene and share their visions for realizing a sustainable society.
The two-day event was organized by the AI Japan R&D Network, the DWIH Tokyo the Embassy of France to Japan and took place at the Miraikan and online. The DFG and partner organizations of all three countries contributed to a variety of side events. GWL-Prize winner Prof. Dr. Elisabeth André gave a talk at the “Haru Fest” of the Honda Research Institute (HRI).

(29.11.22) A DFG Delegation headed by Dr. Heide Ahrens, DFG Secretary General, visited New Delhi, India, in October 2022 along with Dr. Jörg Schneider, Head International Affairs, and Dr. Ingrid Krüßmann, deputy head International Affairs. The programme included visits to reputed scientific institutes like IIT Delhi, meetings with German organizations as well as funding organizations such as Department of Science and Technology (DST) and others, Ministry of Science and Technology.

(16.11.22) On 27 and 28 October, some 50 representatives of 17 German and Polish academic institutions and the embassies of both countries met in Berlin to continue the institutional discussion series on crisis management strategies.

Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize Online Conference 2022

(15.11.22) In honour of DFG Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize winners of 2019, Prof. Dr. Stefan Aykut at the University of Hamburg and Dr. Jonathan Donges at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the DFG and the German Centre for Research and Innovation Tokyo (DWIH Tokyo) are presenting the second Heinz Maier-Leibnitz-Prize Online Conference.
Right after the 27th UN Climate Change Conference researchers from Germany and Japan will share their insight into the state of our planet in the year 2022.

Results of Call by DFG and JSPS

(11.11.22) The DFG and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) are funding joint Japanese-German research projects in the field of Materials Science and Engineering for Energy Storage, Conversion, and Transport. After the first joint call in 2018 in the field of Geosciences DFG and JSPS agreed to publish a new call in March 2022 to further support the Japanese-German research. Based on the recommendation of a team of Japanese and German reviewers 8 projects have been selected for funding.

(07.11.22) On 18 October 2022, the virtual event Networking for Research – German Universities of Applied Sciences & Researchers in Canada/USA was held as a further item in the series of theme-based matchmaking events with universities of applied sciences (UAS).

UAS delegation trip to Jordan

(25.10.22) At the end of September 2022, just under 20 representatives of German Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) visited a number of universities and research institutions in Jordan. The 5-day trip was part of the DFG initiative that brings researchers from German UAS together with international researchers through various formats. It was prepared back in February at a virtual matchmaking event (DFG - Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft – Networking research at universities of applied sciences with research in Jordan) on the topic of “Water Nexus Research – Challenges and Strategies for a Sustainable Future”.

15 years of DFG in India – Enabling Indo-German research collaboration

(20.10.22) Exchanging new ideas and enabling new endeavours for the future research collaboration between India and Germany – under this motto, the German Research Foundation did celebrate 15 years of its DFG office in India yesterday in New Delhi.

GAIN taps into new target groups outside North America

(09/23/22) For the first time in its history, the network meeting was held in Europe. Some 400 participants, including 250 postdocs, benefited from the opportunity to exchange ideas and engage in discussion.

Extension of the DFG’s cooperation agreement with South Tyrol

(26.08.22) At the beginning of August, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) and the regional government of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano – South Tyrol extended their joint funding agreement. DFG Vice President Professor Dr. Britta Siegmund and South Tyrol’s Governor Arno Kompatscher signed the cooperation agreement at an event promoting the German-speaking research area at the Landhaus in Bolzano, which was also attended by high-ranking representatives of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), as well as numerous researchers from Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Virtual German-Senegalese dialogue event

(13.07.22) DFG and MESRI hosted a virtual German-Senegalese dialogue event on 09 June 2022. Thereby, they encouraged an exchange about the respective research priorities and funding opportunities of the two countries.

Uzbek Ambassador visits the DFG

(07.07.22) On 14 June, DFG President Prof. Dr. Katja Becker received the Ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Nabijon Kasimov, at the DFG Head Office in Bonn, accompanied by the country’s attachés for science and industry. The aim of the meeting was to resume talks on expanding scientific cooperation between the DFG and Uzbekistan, which were interrupted for a while due to the pandemic.

African-German Scientific Exchange: Sustainable Intensification of Agriculture

(07.07.22) While scientific exchange and networking between researchers from sub-Saharan Africa and Germany primarily took place in the past in the context of physical meetings at conferences and workshops, the DFG and its partner organisations in the region had to find ways to adapt joint networking activities to the new realities of international cooperation since the beginning of the pandemic.

Copernicus Award 2022 and 2020: two pairs of winners honoured at festive ceremony in Warsaw

(28.06.22) DFG President Katja Becker and FNP President Maciej Żylicz presented the 2022 Copernicus Award on 9 June 2022. The festive ceremony also included the in-person presentation of the 2020 awards since the last event had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. Interner Linkmore

ICMR and DFG announce Call for Proposals in Toxicology

(10.06.22) DFG and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) are happy to announce a new funding initiative, with this year’s pilot call targeting projects in toxicology. Projects to be funded in this initiative will have an Indian and a German part, run for up to three years and can include funding items from staff (doctoral or post-doctoral researchers), consumables, small devices, workshops, travel or other needed items.

German-Japanese Funding Programme for Joint Workshops and Research Visits

(09.06.22) The DFG and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) jointly fund German-Japanese workshops and research visits. This initiative aims to bring together relevant and competitive researchers from Germany and Japan to establish collaborative scientific relationships and prepare joint projects. Proposals will be accepted until 6th September.

Exchange with ‘University Research Administrators’ (URA)

(08.06.22) DFG Office Japan is strengthening its relations to University Research Administrator (URA) Offices at national Universities at the beginning of the new fiscal year. Personal exchange has been limited during the pandemic since early 2020 and international cooperationen had to be moved to online platforms. As Japan is gradually opening its borders and resuming international activities, DFG Office Japan is intensifying its ties to central stakeholders.

The German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) and the Department of Science of Technology (DST), Government of India, have recently announced their new open funding programme for Indo-German International Research Training Groups (IRTG).

Indian Science Minister meets DFG President

(10.05.22) In the context of the recent Intergovernmental Consultations between India and Germany, the Indian Minister of Science Dr Jitendra Singh met with DFG President Prof Katja Becker. In the open and effective discussion in Berlin, the two policymakers discussed a wide range of topics, including the organization of the two science systems, science-driven funding of basic research, the relevance of diversity and equal opportunity in research as well as the importance of biomedical research.

Webinar Japan, Singapore

(02.05.22) SGInnovate (Singapore) is organising the webinar "Sustainable use of green hydrogen for mobility and transportation system" on 12 May 2022 with the support of the DFG, the German Embassy in Singapore and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Scientists from the three participating countries will present their research in the field of green hydrogen during the event. There will also be an opportunity for questions during a Q&A.

German-Korean Funding Programmes

(16.03.22) The DFG and the NRF have published a call for proposals for joint German-Korean workshops and research visits. Furthermore, a webinar has been conducted to share information on bilaterally funded International Research Training Groups (IRTGs).

DFG-EURAXESS EVENT on Opportunities for Collaborative Research

(10.03.22) To share information about ways to approach potential collaboration partners and find the right funding, the DFG was hosted by EURAXESS ASEAN for an online Info-Session on March 3rd. The event was aimed at research administrators, seasoned principal investigators and experienced researchers in the ASEAN region seeking to explore funding opportunities for collaborative research with German partners.

New call for “Joint Japanese-German Research Projects in Materials Science and Engineering for Energy Storage, Conversion, and Transport” by DFG and JSPS

(10.03.22) The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) are pleased to announce a new funding opportunity for joint Japanese-German research proposals in the field of materials science and engineering for energy storage, conversion, and transport. The submission deadline is on 8th June 2022.

Networking research at universities of applied sciences with research in Jordan

(08.03.22) The kick-off event Water Nexus Research – challenges and strategies for a sustainable future marked the start of a series of theme-based matchmaking events with different countries and regions for UDIF-HAW, the DFG initiative aimed at reaching out to universities of applied sciences (UAS) whose application-oriented research is highly regarded in an international context.

DFG North America presents panel on research data infrastructure at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)

(02/28/22) The DFG organized an exchange on the various initiatives in research data infrastructure on both sides of the Atlantic, bringing together representatives from the private sector, academia, and public administration.

Transatlantic Tandem Talk: Cluster of Excellence CECAD Researches Long Life

(02/24/22) This time, the focus was on the work of the DFG-funded Cluster of Excellence CECAD at the University of Cologne and the Max Planck Institute for the Biology of Aging. The panel discussion, with an audience of almost 300 participants, was entitled "Healthy Aging: Brain Control of Longevity and Metabolism.”

Virtual African-German Solar Energy Status Workshop: Funded research teams present themselves

(08.02.22) On 28 January 2022, the grantees of 13 approved German-African cooperation projects presented the current status of their cooperation and possible plans for further cooperation projects in a virtual workshop.

(03.02.22) For the first time, the DFG and CAMES sign an MoU to strengthen their cooperation and to stimulate research collaborations between Germany and the 19 CAMES member states.

DST and DFG announce new programme for large consortia: Indo-German International Research Training Groups

(03.02.22) For many years, the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) have provided joint project funding for Indian and German P.I.s collaborating in Indo-German research projects. Through many projects, the Indian and German communities have strengthened their ties. It is a mark of DST’s and DFG’s success that the two agencies have started to receive enquiries about funding opportunities for larger consortia with plans for complex projects of longer duration.

DFG and DAAD participate in the 35th CIHA World Congress

(19.01.22) On January 20 from 12.30 pm to 14 pm, the DFG Office Latin America, with the collaboration of DAAD Regional Office Rio de Janeiro, promote the virtual event “German-Latin America Research Cooperation in History of the Art”. The information session will take place in the framework of the 35th CIHA World Congress (MOTION: MIGRATIONS).
