Since 2010 the DFG has awarded the Europa Prize to three winners of the national science competition "Jugend forscht". In addition to the prize money of €1.000, each winner is given the opportunity to prepare for the European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS). In this way the DFG is underlining the importance of an international outlook to a successful research career.
Part of the prize is a mentoring programme in which the DFG organises and funds contacts between the prizewinners and proven early career researchers. These mentors prepare the young researchers for the EU competition. The mentoring programme is designed to encourage lasting links between generations of researchers.

The three winners of the DFG’s 2026 Europa-Preis (Europe prize) won a second prize and three special prizes. On the occasion of EUCYS being held in Germany for the first time in over three decades, the DFG awarded a special prize for an outstanding research project related to basic research to a team of two young female researchers from Egypt.
