Individual Funding Opportunities for Clinician Scientists
Many Clinician Scientist Programmes welcome applicants with their own funding who wish to benefit from the programme’s network and qualification framework. The DFG’s peer-review process may, in some cases, replace part of the internal programme selection.
Clinician Scientists can apply for funding for protected research time via the Module Temporary Substitutes for Clinician(interner Link) under the following programs:
- Walter Benjamin Programm(interner Link)
- Emmy Noether Programm(interner Link)
- Heisenberg Programm(interner Link)
- Research Grants Programm(interner Link)
Note
Applying for a Temporary Substitute Position in connection with a proposal for a Research Gran(interner Link) enables Clinician Scientists to apply for project funding at the same time.
IMPORTANT: The share of protected research time must be structured to enable independent and competitive research. Coordination with the relevant Clinician Scientist Programme—ideally in the planning stage—is essential. Agreements may be attached informally to the proposal.
Additional funding opportunities for networking and international mobility
Beyond financing protected research time, national and international networking is essential to building a research career. Here, the DFG offers a range of funding instruments that can be combined with participation in a Clinician Scientist Programme:
- The Scientific Network(interner Link) programme supports subject-specific networking on a nationwide basis.
- The Initiation of International Collaboratio(interner Link) programme funds efforts to establish collaborative relationships.
- The Walter Benjamin Programm(interner Link) offers researchers in early career phases – including physicians in residency training – the opportunity to undertake a research stay abroad.
