Three Candidates for DFG Presidential Election

Three researchers running as successors to Peter Strohschneider / Decision to be made by General Assembly in July in Rostock / New president to take office on 1 January 2020

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) is now able to announce the candidates to succeed the current President, Prof. Dr. Peter Strohschneider, when his term of office concludes at the end of the year. At the annual meeting of the DFG – the largest research funding organisation and central self-governing body of the research community in Germany – in Rostock in early July, three researchers will stand for election by the 96 member organisations.

The list of candidates was drawn up by a selection committee appointed by the DFG Senate in March 2018 and chaired by DFG Vice President Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schön, primarily on the basis of nominations submitted by the member organisations, and has now been presented to the members of the Senate and the Joint Committee.

The candidates are (in alphabetical order): Prof. Dr. Katja Becker, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Justus Liebig University Giessen; Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Marquardt, Process Engineering, Forschungszentrum Jülich; Prof. Dr. Dorothea Wagner, Theoretical Informatics, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

The election of the future president will take place on 3 July at the General Assembly during the DFG’s annual meeting, which will be held at the University of Rostock in the university’s 600th anniversary year. The current president, Peter Strohschneider, has held the highest position at the DFG since 2013 and will step down according to the normal system of rotation after two periods in office. His successor will take office on 1 January 2020 for an initial term of four years.
