The DFG is planning a two-day workshop on “Mapping Information Infrastructures” for the first quarter of 2027. In doing so, it is responding to the need that has been repeatedly expressed by the research communities, namely a mapping of information infrastructures that reflects the dynamic requirements of research practice. The communities are invited to help shape this initiative.

Objectives

The workshop will discuss the prerequisites, specific purpose and requirements for a mapping of information infrastructures. In addition, the DFG aims to provide impetus for implementing such a mapping exercise and offer participants an opportunity to network and exchange ideas on its joint development and design. 

Target groups

Researchers from all disciplines who use information infrastructures in their research are invited to contribute their experience and identify their needs as part of the dialogue. Developers and operators of information infrastructures are also invited to contribute their organisational and technical expertise.

• Prerequisites, challenges and requirements for a mapping exercise
• Appropriate presentation formats and operating models
• Addressing the dynamic nature of research needs and technological developments
• Collaborative, research-led implementation

Dialogue formats

These topics will be discussed at a two-day in-person workshop in the first quarter of 2027. In order to gain the best possible understanding of users' requirements for a mapping of information infrastructures and to focus the programme accordingly, two online surveys will be conducted in summer and autumn 2026, and the communities are invited to contribute to the planning process. In the first step, the DFG would like to identify the thematic focus that would best serve the communities – in other words which types of information infrastructures should be given priority in the mapping exercise (link to the preliminary survey(externer Link)). This input will be incorporated in the draft programme. The second step will involve an open call for contributions and additional topic suggestions (publication date t.b.c.). The workshop programme will then be finalised on this basis. We look forward to your contribution!
