In September, the DFG took part in the German Science Day (GSD) and the subsequent EU-DAAD Matchmaking event in Cairo. The multi-day event gave Egyptian researchers at both early and advanced career stages an opportunity to learn about the German research landscape and funding opportunities, establish contacts with German higher education institutions and research organisations, and explore possibilities for joint research projects.

Organised annually by the DAAD Regional Office Cairo as part of the project COSIMENA(externer Link), this year’s GSD took place on 15 September. The GSD is aimed particularly at doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, combining information on research and funding opportunities in Germany with academic exchange and individual advice. The DFG also provided information on its funding opportunities and options for international research cooperation. For the first time, a university of applied sciences was also represented, namely Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg.

The German Science Day was followed on 16 September by the EU-DAAD Matchmaking event. Aimed particularly at researchers at advanced career stages and professors, it sought to bring together researchers from Egypt and Germany with shared research interests. The focus was on funding opportunities in a European context. Workshops were held in three thematic areas: “Sustainability Research: Energy Engineering and Urban Design”, “Media System Analysis in the Arab World and Beyond” and “Global History and Social Sciences”. Based on the thematic areas of Horizon Europe, they enabled participants to identify shared research interests and establish contacts for potential future collaboration. Representatives of various German and European research organisations and funding organisations were available to engage with and advise participants.

The trip concluded with a visit to Mansoura University(externer Link), one of Egypt’s largest public universities, located in the Nile Delta. Representatives of the university provided insights into its research activities and international cooperation. The visit included the internationally renowned Nephrology and Urology Center.

Through its participation in these events, the DFG was able to continue its dialogue with the Egyptian research community and provide information on funding opportunities for German-Egyptian research cooperation.
