Supported by the DFG, the so-called Applied Symposium was organised jointly by the German Chemical Society (GDCh) and the Singapore National Institute of Chemistry (SNIC) in connection with the 12th Singapore International Chemistry Conference (SICC-12). In addition to DFG Vice President Seeberger, four other high-profile chemistry professors from German universities were invited to attend the conference together with Singapore-based researchers. Ambassador Dr. Bettina Fanghänel opened the event with a welcome address.

In addition to attending the symposium, Dr. Johanna Kowol-Santen and Raoul Wagner visited the National Research Foundation (NRF) Singapore, where they were received by Professor Subodh Mhaisalkar, Executive Director for Academic Research, and his colleagues. Talks here focused on the collaboration in the field of computer science which is planned for 2026.

A meeting was also held with representatives of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR).  Here, the discussion with Deputy Chief Executive Professor Andy Hor addressed the joint call for proposals in the field of sustainable chemistry which is planned for March 2025.

Taking advantage of the opportunity for dialogue, the delegation was also able to set up meetings with representatives of other organisations on the fringes of the main programme, including the German Embassy in Singapore, the Technical University of Munich and the German Chamber of Commerce Abroad.

All in all, the visit enabled the DFG to expand its contacts in Singapore and establish an even more solid foundation for future collaborations.
