Election of Members of the 2015 Review Boards

Over 130,000 researchers were invited to participate in the 2015 review board election between 26 October and 23 November 2015. For the third time the election of review board members was held online, allowing researchers to cast their votes from anywhere in the world using a standard Internet connection and with no need for any special software. Around 37% of the electorate took part in the election.

In the 48 newly elected review boards for the 2016 to 2019 membership period consisting of a total of 613 elected persons, 382 researchers represent their disciplines for the first time; 231 members were already part of a review board in the previous period. From the DFG’s perspective, it is very satisfactory to see the number of women in the review boards rise to 23.5%. This figure was 20.8% following the election in 2011.

The final result of the 2015 review board election was ascertained in line with Section 9 No. 9 Clause 3 of the Election Regulations by a notice sent to the DFG Senate on 3 March 2016. It was published on the DFG website on 4 March 2016, and replaced the preliminary election result published there shortly after the election deadline on 26 November 2015. For the newly elected review board members, work in these important DFG statutory bodies began with the inaugural sessions in spring 2016. Each inaugural session signalled the end of the review boards’ 2012 to 2015 membership period.

The main responsibility of review board members is to scientifically evaluate funding proposals in their respective subject areas and thus ensure that all proposals within a given subject area are assessed using a common standard. The review board members write a final recommendation which is submitted to the relevant decision-making body of the DFG together with the proposals. – Photo: Meeting of the review board "Non-European Languages and Cultures..."on 18 February 2013 in Bonn.
