Impressions of the event
The summit brought together leading voices from academia, policy and international research agencies for six plenary sessions to discuss structural challenges and emerging opportunities for women's participation in STEM, from AI ethics and climate science to sex- and gender-sensitive health research.
At the opening ceremony, DFG President Prof. Dr. Katja Becker delivered a keynote alongside INSA President Prof. Shekhar Mande and Ylann Schemm, Executive Director of the Elsevier Foundation. She highlighted the importance of sex- and gender-responsive policies, inclusive research environments and equitable international partnerships in strengthening the global research ecosystem.
The DFG also co-organised a plenary session titled “Integrating Sex- and Gender-Sensitive Perspectives into Medical and Health Research – a German Perspective”. Moderated by Dr. Franziska Langer, Director, DFG Office India and DFG International Affairs, the panel featured contributions from Naima Tiné, University of Greifswald; Dr. Philipp Töpfer, University Medicine Greifswald; Dr. Eva Becher, Bielefeld University, and Dr. Eva Reichwein, DFG Research Culture. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the German delegation participated in the session online.
The session also provided an opportunity to present the project “Inklusive Exzellenz in der Medizin” (InkE, Inclusive Excellence in Medicine), a five-year initiative funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) and based at the University of Greifswald and University Medicine Greifswald. InkE aims to strengthen sex- and gender-sensitive approaches in medical research and to raise awareness particularly among early-career researchers. Two members of the InkE team, Naima Tiné and Dr. Philipp Töpfer, contributed to the panel, presenting the project's practical research experience to an international audience.
The GS25 at INSA provided a valuable platform to showcase the DFG’s long-standing efforts to integrate sex and gender perspectives into research evaluation, funding frameworks and institutional cooperation.
