On 10 and 11 April 2019, the DFG Senate Commission on Key Questions in Clinical Research hosted a symposium on the topic “Focus on Research in University Medicine - Current Situation and Outlook” at the Historical Merchants’ Hall in Freiburg. It was attended by over 150 representatives of university medicine and medical faculties, non-university research institutions, research organisations and funding bodies, learned societies and representatives of relevant ministries. At the symposium, members of the Senate Commission presented aspects of their work which are of special importance to medical research in Germany and discussed them with participants[A1] :

• Research and Health Policy Frameworks for Clinical Research
• Career Paths in University Medicine – Combining Research and Clinical Practice
• Quality in Clinical Research
• Clinical Trials in University Medicine
• Translation: Transfer of Results from Clinical Research

During the concluding panel discussion, where the participants included Minister Theresia Bauer, participants debated the future of university medicine. The questions discussed included:

• Where and how do clinicians conduct research in a university context and what preconditions are necessary for a career as a clinician scientist?
• How might university medicine be differentiated?
• What roles and responsibilities do the different participants in the research system have (e.g. the role of non-university research institutions and their relationship with university medicine)?
