The priority topics on which the General Assembly passed resolutions and published “Summaries and Recommendations” at the end of each reporting cycle were:

2020 - 2022

  1. Increase in the proportion of women in the postdoc phase
  2. How universities deal with the issue of diversity

2018 - 2020

  1. Relief for female researchers in connection with committee work
  2. Recruitment procedures for attracting female researchers


The renewed commitment of DFG members in 2017 was based on the findings of the study (2017) on “Implementation and Impact of the Research-Oriented Standards on Gender Equality”. All in all, the study showed positive effects of the “Research-Oriented Standards on Gender Equality” in terms of promoting equal opportunity in the German science system. According to the study, the reports submitted by the HEIs as requested by the DFG led to significant stimuli and achieved a high degree of penetration in member institutions. Gender equality is perceived as a strategic task and quality feature by management personnel. The “Research-Oriented Standards on Gender Equality” contributed to organisational development and a cultural shift towards more equal opportunities.

2013 to 2017

For the years 2009, 2011 and 2013, the Working Group of the General Assembly noted significant progress in the further development of gender equality, especially with regard to the implementation of measures at universities. In terms of the development of the actual share of women at the various career levels, however, the increases fell short of expectations. Further efforts were therefore necessary to achieve the goals of the gender equality standards – in particular increased participation of women at all academic career levels. On 3 July 2013 therefore, the DFG General Assembly adopted a package of measures that placed a greater focus on the development of the numerical proportion of women.

2008 to 2013

In 2008, the DFG General Assembly adopted the “Research-Oriented Standards on Gender Equality” with the aim of significantly increasing the proportion of women at all academic career levels. Through this voluntary commitment, DFG members defined personnel and structural standards aimed at establishing a sustainable gender equality policy in the science and higher education landscape.

In the period from 2009 to 2013, a working group appointed by the DFG’s General Assembly assessed the gender equality concepts submitted by member institutions, supported their implementation and tracked progress.
