The DFG Senate Commission on Key Questions in Clinical Research and the BIH Center for Regenerative Therapies (BCRT) joined forces to organise the symposium "Funding of Translational Research in University Medicine" in Berlin on 8 October 2019. It was attended by over 100 representatives of university medicine and medical faculties, non-university research institutions, research organisations and funding bodies, learned societies and representatives of relevant ministries.

The symposium marked the publication of "Recommendations for Funding of Translational Research in University Medicine" by the DFG Senate Commission on Key Questions in Clinical Research in September 2019. Topics of special importance for translational research in university medicine were discussed with attendees:

  • A Mindset for Translation in University Medicine
  • Translational Infrastructures
  • Value of Translation – Translational Incentives

Translational incentives were touched upon during the subsequent panel discussion. The questions discussed included:

  • How can appreciation of early career researchers be structured for translational projects?
  • What are appropriate standards for evaluating translation?
  • What do university hospitals need to do to achieve the objective of translation?
