The “Research in Germany” initiative was featured at the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) for the first time. As one of 38 exhibitors at the purely virtual conference, which took place from 18 to 24 July, the initiative presented information and involvement opportunities for international researchers in the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence. Although it was the initiative’s first appearance at the ICML, “Research in Germany” will already have been familiar to this subject community after its successful showing at the virtual conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) last December.

The “Research in Germany” exhibitor page invited visitors to browse in depth through the extensive range of information provided. Videos, short texts and downloadable information material offered an overview of the opportunities for research and funding in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning in Germany. Visitors could also get in touch directly with representatives of various research institutions and funding organisations via chat.

Cyber Valley, the Cluster of Excellence “Machine Learning for Science”, the Max Planck Society, the Fraunhofer Society, the Hesse Center for Artificial Intelligence and numerous Collaborative Research Centres took part: they presented the German research sector in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning, inviting visitors to the stand to engage in subject-specific discussion.

It was also possible to contact the research funding organisations Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, German Academic Exchange Service and DFG for individual advice via chat and video consultations. In order to accommodate visitors from all time zones, representatives from the DFG Head Office in Bonn and the DFG offices in Washington and New Delhi were available at various times. Here and on the stand website, funding organisations were able to provide information about their tailor-made funding programmes for international AI researchers.

The DFG’s “AI Initiative”, the Humboldt Professorship for AI and the DAAD’s Postdoc Tour for AI Researchers were presented in detail.
