(25.03.21) DFG Office Moscow presented funding opportunities with Russia and ongoing bilateral collaborations between universities and research institutions in Lower Saxony to an audience of over 120. The online meeting on cooperation in the field of “education, higher education and research" was part of the event cycle “Lower Saxony and Russia: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow”, which took place as part of the Year of Germany in Russia in March 2021.

DFG Office Moscow/CIS participated in the second online event on 18 March, which focused on the topic of education, research and science. After a welcoming address given by Björn Thümler, Minister for Science and Culture of the State of Lower Saxony, the audience was introduced to Lower Saxony’s research and education landscape. In her talk, President of the University of Osnabrück Prof. Susanne Menzel-Riedl talked about cooperation opportunities for students and young academics from Russia. Representatives of the University of Braunschweig in Lower Saxony and Leibniz University Hanover presented not only double degree programmes but also their numerous DFG-funded Research Training Groups and Collaborative Research Centres, which include special programmes to promote early career investigators.

The second part of the event was dedicated to research collaboration: after a general overview of the system of academic institutions in Lower Saxony, the DFG presented its programmes dedicated to promoting Russian-German cooperation and provided details of the bilateral calls for proposals with partner organisations.

The information series “Lower Saxony and Russia: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow” is a project that is being implemented by DMAN (Deutsche Management Akademie Niedersachsen) with the support of the government of Lower Saxony and its delegation in Moscow.

At three online events featuring experts from Lower Saxony and the representatives of various ministries, authorities, educational institutions and companies, interested Russians were given an introduction to Lower Saxony’s particular offerings in the fields of culture, research and business. The events served as a platform for exchanging information and establishing contacts between the Russian and German participants.

The Year of Germany in Russia 2020/2021 is under the patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and is a joint initiative of the German Embassy in Moscow, the Goethe-Institut in Russia and the German-Russian Chamber of Commerce Abroad. Organisation of the activities planned up until the end of June 2021 will be adapted to the epidemiological situation: they will be held virtually, in hybrid formats, and in some cases as face-to-face events if possible.
