(08.05.13) The 2nd Annual Global Meeting of the Global Research Council (GRC) will take place from 27 to 29 May 2013 at Berlin. It will bring together the heads of about 70 science and research councils from around the world. Hosted jointly by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the National Council of Technological and Scientific Development (CNPq) of Brazil, it will be the largest meeting of its kind so far. It is expected that participants will endorse an Action Plan on Open Access to scientific publications as well as a high-level Statement of Principles for Research Integrity.

DFG Announces Recipients of 2013 Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize
Wide Range of Disciplines / Number of Prizes and Prize Money Increased
(02.05.13) This year's recipients of the most important prize for early career researchers in Germany have been announced. The selection committee appointed by the DFG and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) have chosen nine researchers, four women and five men, to receive the 2013 Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize. This year the BMBF has increased the prize money from €16,000 to €20,000 per prize. The number of recipients also increased, with only six prizes having been awarded in previous years. The awards ceremony for the 2013 Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prizes will be held on 3 June in Berlin.
Core Facilities: Widening Access to Research Instrumentation
DFG to Fund Ten Additional Projects
(26.04.13) The DFG has approved funding for ten additional core facilities to make existing research instrumentation more easily and efficiently accessible to researchers. The projects will each receive up to €450,000 over the next three years. The facilities are based at universities and institutes in Bremen, Aachen, Karlsruhe, Mannheim, Ilmenau, Bayreuth, Essen, Magdeburg, Konstanz, Bielefeld and Duisburg-Essen, as well as at Lake Stechlin.
Metin Tolan Wins 2013 Communicator Award
Dortmund Researcher Honoured for Innovative Science Communication in Physics
(24.04.13) This year's Communicator Award, presented by the DFG and the Donors' Association, will go to experimental physicist Metin Tolan. The scientist from TU Dortmund University was selected in recognition of his diverse and innovative approaches to communicating physics and research findings to the public and the media. The award, which is worth €50,000, is the most important prize for science communication awarded in Germany.

USA Study Tour "IT-Infrastructure"
The rapidly increasing importance of appropriate IT infrastructure is a central issue for the further development of the German research landscape. To answer questions on computational science and engineering, the Commission for IT-Infrastructure (KfR) travelled to select locations in the United States.
MIT European Career Fair 2013
Some 5000 people attended the 17. European Career Fair at MIT from February 23 through 25. Germany has gained international awareness thanks in part to the diverse funding possibilities for junior scientists, the flexibility mostly through Excellence Initiative, and the increasing internationalization of the universities.

On February 28 and March 1, 2013, twelve German Heuss Professors and their colleagues from the New School for Social Research gathered for a conference entitled “Social Research in a Transforming World: Transatlantic Conversations”. The conference was organized by the DFG and the New School for Social Research.

Third Leibniz Lecture in India
The third Leibniz Lecture in India was presented by the 1990 Leibniz awardee Professor Berthold Hölldobler, an expert in Sociobiology, Behavioural Physiology and Chemical Ecology, in Bangalore on Tuesday, 26th March 2013. His public lecture was entitled “War and Peace in Ant Societies”.
