Protecting and strengthening the freedom and independence of research in the face of increasing attacks, including in Germany, was the central theme of the three-day meeting. The DFG also voiced sharp criticism of the AfD’s research policy.

DFG Welcomes European Parliament Approval of New Regulation

The adopted regulation provides for simplified rules concerning so-called NGT-1 plants that could also have been produced using conventional breeding methods. These plants will no longer be subject to the strict authorisation and labelling requirements. The DFG welcomes this development.

Veterinary scientist Christa Thöne-Reineke of FU Berlin is being recognised for her consistent commitment to integrating animal welfare in research and training. Molecular medicine specialist Birgit Schittek receives the award for developing 3D skin models that make it possible to replace animal experiments.
