Permanent Senate Commission on Food Safety
The Senate Commission on Food Safety advises the Senate of the DFG as well as parliaments and public authorities on questions of food safety. The commission also organises symposia and expert meetings and publishes results as scientific recommendations and statements on the DFG homepage and in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The evaluation of the safety to human health of foods, including novel and functional foods encompasses safety assessment of food constituents and additives as well as novel processing methods. Opinions address safety issues as well as technological necessitiy and benefits to nutritional physiology.
The commissions tasks are achieved through working groups, which prepare draft documents to be discussed and finalized for publication in the plenary. A direct exchange of information and experience at the European level is ascertained, since commission experts are working also in different panels of the European Food Safety Authority, such as CONTAM (Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain), ANS (Panel on Food Additives and Nutrient Sources added to Food), CEF (Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids), and GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms Panel), and the scientific committee (SC).
