The DFG office in Moscow
Germany's scientific relations with Russia are part of a lively centuries-old tradition. Russia is particularly significant for the German scientific system and is a priority country in the DFG's international funding programmes. The DFG has maintained an intensive scientific dialogue with Russia for decades and, since 2003, has supported the development of bilateral cooperation through its own representative office in Moscow. Alongside the Head Office in Bonn and the Group for International Cooperation, the liaison office functions as a local point of contact, providing advice and mentoring in cooperation programmes.
The DFG uses a number of different instruments to support cooperation with Russian researchers. As a general rule, researchers can also apply for financial resources needed for international collaboration in all kinds of project funding. The DFG's website lists special funding programmes, for instance to set up international collaborations.

Tasks
Tasks Performed by the DFG’s Russia/CIS Office
Since the office’s opening, the DFG has been pursuing the following tasks and goals in Russia:
- Developing and supporting bilateral cooperation
This task involves providing advice and mentoring services for researchers, as well as for research (funding) organisations in Germany and the CIS countries. - Maintaining and strengthening institutional collaboration with Russian partner organisations
Consists of setting up and expanding co-financed cooperation projects in accordance with the DFG’s funding spectrum and review standards. This is done through joint funding agreements and announcements. - Early career support
Involves providing support in establishing contact and cooperative relationships, in particular within the framework of the International Research Training Groups. This task also involves including early career researchers in events and addressing them through specially targeted conferences and symposia. - Preparing for and implementing measures to promote cooperation
Involves initiating and organising bilateral seminars and roundtable discussions and mentoring delegation visits to Russia and Germany, as well as supporting Russia’s integration into the European Research Area by arranging and participating in conferences on the synergies between bilateral German-Russian and multilateral EU research funding. - Intensifying cooperation with research centres in Russia and the other CIS countries
Involves performing public relations work and establishing contacts with research centres outside Moscow and Russia. These activities focus on those centres whose international contacts do not currently fulfil the high scientific potential often achieved in a variety of areas. - Analysing and evaluating relevant developments in scientific policy in Russia and the CIS countries
Involves sending regular reports to the DFG Head Office and to external publications.
Partner Organizations
The systematic expansion of institutional collaboration with Russian funding organisations facilitates the joint funding of collaborations in all areas of basic research. Information on proposal submissions and framework agreements on the co-financing of research projects with the following partner organisations is available at:
DFG-funded Projects and German Research Institutes
In addition to supporting the initiation of German-Russian collaboration projects, the DFG therefore funds around 300 projects with Russian involvement. It does so increasingly within the framework of larger coordinated programmes, like International Research Training Groups, Priority Programmes and Collaborative Research Centres. The GEPRIS Internet database contains information on research projects currently funded by the DFG, as well as on the people and institutions involved.Externer Link
