(25.05.16) The Year of Germany in Mexico was officially launched by Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Germany’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, in Mexico City at the beginning of June. As part of the year's activities, the “Research in Germany” initiative will once again be represented at the XXV International Materials Research Congress (IMRC) at the JW Marriott conference hotel in Cancún.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the congress. To mark the occasion, Professor Hiroshi Amano from Nagoya University, who received the Nobel Prize in Physics with two other colleagues in 2014, will give a presentation entitled “Blue LEDs and Future Electronics for Establishing Sustainable Society”.

With its interdisciplinary programme, the event offers an interactive discussion forum for exchange on relevant topics such as materials characterisation, materials for energy applications, nanotechnology, soft matter and structural materials, trends in basic research and other relevant materials science subjects.

Representatives of the DAAD, the DFG and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation will be on hand at the “Research in Germany” stand in the exhibition area on Monday, 15 August to advise interested attendees on career options and funding opportunities. There will also be a "Research in Germany" lunch session on 16 August. This will be an information event where the participating institutions present their funding programmes, followed by questions from the audience.

Professor Dr. Heinz-Günter Brokmeier from the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering at the Clausthal University of Technology has also been invited by the “Research in Germany” initiative to present his work during the session and give attendees an insight into Germany as a research location.

Professor Brokmeier will speak on “Crystallographic Texture Variation Due to Alloying Elements in Magnesium” on 16 August at 8.30am as part of the “Texture and Microstructure” symposium.

In brief – Overview of the “Research in Germany” events during this year’s IMRC in Cancún:

• 15 August – “Research in Germany” stand: representatives of the DAAD, the DFG and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation will be offering individual advice on funding opportunities for graduates, research visits, Collaborative Research Centres and international research collaborations.
• 16 August – 2.15pm to 3.45pm (Gustino Restaurant, JW Marriott) – “Research in Germany – Fellowships, Exchange and Collaboration Programmes” lunch session: Professor Brokmeier will be joined by representatives of the DAAD, the DFG and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to tell attendees about opportunities in research funding and to give them an insight into Germany as a research location.
