Universidad de Antioquia is the DFG's new cooperation partner in Colombia
(18.06.19) A new funding opportunity for bilateral projects is now available to researchers from Germany and Colombia. Under the cooperation agreement signed in January between the DFG and the Universidad de Antioquia (UdeA), research projects, mobility, seminars and workshops as well as other joint research activities are eligible for funding. The cooperation is the result of intensive efforts on both sides. “Discussions with researchers from the UdeA and Germany have clearly shown great interest in the possibility of funding joint projects under the new initiative – I therefore assume the volume of proposals will be high,” commented Prof. Dr. Sergio Cristancho Marulanda, Vice-Rector for Research at the UdeA in Medellín.

The Colombian university's longstanding cooperation with Germany is underpinned by more than 20 agreements with German universities and research institutions. Cooperations are also in place with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK). The relationship with the DFG was strengthened in 2016 through the visit by President Prof. Dr. Peter Strohschneider and the workshop held in 2017 on cooperation between Germany and Antioquia Province.
To mark the new cooperation agreement, the DFG Office Latin America and the Universidad de Antioquia held a joint workshop in March to present the new funding opportunities.
Around 100 researchers from different disciplines at the UdeA took part in the information event on the university campus in Medellin, where representatives from the DFG provided an overview of the German research landscape and information on funding opportunities for bilateral projects.
The programme also included a presentation by Dr. Gustavo Andrés Ramos López, a researcher at the Universidad de los Andes (Uniandes). Together with the university in Bogotá, the DFG is also funding German-Colombian research projects under a successful cooperation agreement. As an example for colleagues at the UdeA, López presented his own electrical engineering project funded through the DFG-Uniandes initiative and also explained aspects relevant for the application.
At the end of the event, the speakers provided detailed answers to many questions from the audience.
