Funding Atlas 2021
Published every three years, the DFG Funding Atlas presents comprehensive, subject-by-subject key indicators relating to publicly funded research in Germany.
Comprehensive university ranking for Germany differentiated by subject area
With its finely differentiated analyses, the DFG Funding Atlas is the standard source of reference on the success of German higher education institutions (HEIs) in attracting third-party funding. In addition to DFG funding, it also includes third-party funding in the form of direct federal government R&D funding and also funding acquired under the Horizon 2020 programme. In connection with DFG awards, consideration is also given to relative staffing numbers, and analyses are drawn up which take account of the specific subject profile of HEIs (“third-party funding adjusted for subject structure”).
Historical events give rise to the thematic focus area in the current Funding Atlas
The year 2020 was the 100th anniversary of the founding of the DFG, which was originally known as the Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft (“Emergency Association of German Science”). To mark this anniversary, the DFG published the GEPRIS Historisch database in December 2020, enabling a search of master data for the years 1921 to 1945 relating to approximately 50,000 proposals and involving some 13,000 researchers (cf. external link: https://gepris-historisch.dfg.de). As such, this information system invites users to trace the history of the DFG during these years – a period that included a number of major upheavals. In the latest Funding Atlas, the data from GEPRIS Historisch is used to assess the development of the research landscape not just in recent years but also over an extended period of time.
Regional success in attracting third-party funding
Regional profiles and their representation in the form of maps have always been an integral part of the analysis provided by the Funding Atlas series. By looking at large-scale structures in the form of so-called “spatial planning regions”, it is possible to discern regional priorities as well as the degree of networking between German research institutions and HEIs.
