Ursula M. Händel Animal Welfare Prize

€80,000 for animal welfare in research

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) is awarding the Ursula M. Händel Animal Welfare Prize for the ninth time. The prize is awarded to academics in recognition of outstanding contributions to promoting animal welfare in science and research. It goes to research projects that contribute to reducing the burden on animals used in experiments, reducing the number of animals used or else replacing them (3R concept: Reduction, Refinement, Replacement).

The prize is worth up to €80,000 and is to be used for projects that benefit animal welfare in research. In addition to funding research projects and scholarships, the prize money can also be used for complementary measures, for the training and professional development of researchers who work with animals or for scientific events to promote the idea of animal welfare in research. An independent jury recommends the winner, with the right reserved to split the prize among more than one winner. There is no legal entitlement. The prize is awarded at a public event. The criteria for the prize are quality and originality of research and its significance in terms of animal welfare in research.

In addition to a title and a short summary (approx. 300-350 words), the application documents should include a scientific report (max. 10 pages) on the research results and their significance in terms of animal welfare, as well as information on the planned use of the funds. In addition, applicants should submit a curriculum vitae in tabular form that includes a list of the ten most important publications.

Please submit the application documents electronically by e-mail. A separate PDF file should be created for each document (scientific report/application, CV including list of publications) which are to be named accordingly.

Applications are to be submitted by 14 February 2022 at the latest bearing the reference “Ursula M. Händel Animal Welfare Prize”.
