Ursula M. Händel Animal Welfare Prize

€80,000 for animal welfare in research

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) is awarding the Ursula M. Händel Animal Welfare Prize for the tenth time. The prize is awarded to researchers in recognition of outstanding contributions to promoting animal welfare in science and research. It recognises scientific research that contributes to reducing the burden on animals used in experiments, reducing the number of animals used or else replacing them (3R concept: Refinement, Reduction, Replacement).

The prize is worth up to €80,000 and is to be used for projects that benefit animal welfare in research. In addition to funding research projects, the prize money can be used to finance complementary measures such as training and professional development for researchers who work with animals or scientific events to promote the idea of animal welfare in research.

The prize is awarded at the recommendation of an independent jury. The criteria for awarding the prize are the originality and quality of the research, the significance of the research in terms of the 3R concept, its application potential and the usability of the outcomes in support of animal welfare in research in the future, and the applicant’s scientific achievements to date, as well as their potential with regard to action in support of animal welfare in particular. The DFG reserves the right to split the prize among several prizewinners. There is no legal entitlement. The prize will be presented at the anniversary event “20 years of the Ursula M. Händel Animal Welfare Prize”.

Researchers who hold a doctorate and work at a German research institution are eligible to apply for the award. It is also possible to apply as a team with a maximum of four researchers. The application must include the following documents:

  • Title and summary in German and English, to be uploaded to the elan system
  • A scientific report in English on the applicant’s research and its significance for animal welfare, along with information on the planned use of the funds (max. 10 pages in PDF format)
  • An academic curriculum vitae for each applicant, including up to ten publications and using the DFG's CV template in English (see link below)

Please submit your application by 5 November 2023 via the DFG’s elan portal. The online form can be found under Proposal Submission – Nominations – Ursula M. Händel Animal Welfare Prize. Applications for the prize can be submitted via the elan portal from 2 October 2023.
