Funding Atlas 2012
English edition published presenting selected findings as well as decisions on the Excellence Initiative
The English edition of the Funding Atlas 2012 (formerly referred to as the “Funding Ranking”) presents selected findings from the comprehensive German edition. At the core of the report are indicators that provide information concerning the subject areas emphasised by Germany’s higher education institutions and non-university research institutions. Indicators have been selected in particular that illustrate the international aspects of research and research funding. Thus, the DFG Funding Atlas has been especially designed to address individuals involved in international research management who wish to obtain specific information on the “centres of research” in Germany.
The report consequently includes, as a supplement not found in the German edition, the decisions on the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments of Germany, a programme that is highly recognised at the international level. These decisions were taken shortly after the German edition of the Funding Atlas 2012 was published.
The Funding Atlas 2012 contains key data on publicly funded research in Germany. It provides an overview of third-party research funding delivered by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation), the federal government and the EU along with personnel funding delivered by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the European Research Council (ERC), together with funding statements on universities and non-university research institutions. Research clusters, inter-institutional networking trends and the research profiles of individual funding recipients form a particular focus of the report.
The Funding Atlas supersedes the DFG’s Funding Ranking Reports. Packed with a range of graphic and cartographic analyses, the publication is much more than a mere compendium of statistical data. The Funding Atlas moves beyond the “Best of” format generally associated with ranking reports.
In addition to the publication of the Funding Atlas 2012 in book form, a vast amount of additional material is available online as downloadable Excel files and high-definition images. The figures and tables list a wealth of supplementary statistics that are not included in the printed book but referred to in the particular context.
