European Liaison Office of the German Research Organisations
On 18 June 1990 the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service, the DFG, Research Centre Jülich for the Association of Major Research Centres (now the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres), Fraunhofer, the Max Planck Society, the Donors’ Association, and the West German Rectors’ Conference (now the German Rectors’ Conference) established a non-profit association to promote European and international scientific cooperation. The association’s main task is to inform its members, university researchers and non-commercial research facilities in Germany about the EU’s scientific funding schemes.
To facilitate this task, the association established KoWi, the “European Liaison Office of the German Research Organisations”, with offices located in both Brussels and Bonn. KoWi cooperates closely with scientific and research funding institutions both in Germany and abroad. Its main cooperation partners in Germany include research organisations, universities and other higher education institutions, research facilities and state and government offices responsible for EU funding programmes.
