German Committee Future Earth (DKN-Future Earth)
The "German Committee Future Earth" is an advisory body and the national representative for the international developments and activities that will take place under "Future Earth", a new international research programme into global sustainability. The "Future Earth: research for global sustainability" research programme, which is designed to run for the next ten years, provides an interface for the natural and the social sciences and is supported by international umbrella organisations such as ICSU, ISSC, IGFA, the Belmont forum and also UNEP, UNESCO, UNU and WMO (as an observer). The three over-arching research topics to be investigated by Future Earth are: "Dynamic Planet", "Global Development" and "Transition to Sustainability"
The main function of the statutory body is to help to shape the development process of "Future Earth", to identify German contributions and interests and, working with researchers into sustainability, develop them on a national level. Part of the remit of the German Committee Future Earth is to assist in the identification of research topics relevant to society in a "co-design" process (a dialogue between science and the humanities, society and research funding bodies), promote the idea of integrative research and to involve or connect with researchers in the area of natural and social sciences in Germany.
The German Committee Future Earth is therefore a key partner in Germany in the area of integrative research into global sustainability in association with the international "Future Earth" programme.
The DFG is supporting the German Committee Future Earth with a Scientific Secretariat which will act as an interface, a national primary point of contact and a coordinating office.
The contact person in the Scientific Secretariat for the German Committee Future Earth is Dr. Bettina Schmalzbauer (e-mail: email@example.com).
