International Research Marketing

DFG focus areas and activities

Within the world of research there is growing international competition for resources. Countries with a strong research profile are competing for the brightest minds. In this respect, the DFG has been involved in “Research in Germany” since 2010, being the central marketing initiative for Germany as a location for research and innovation.

For the first time, this initiative set about establishing the framework for systematic and coordinated information on and advertisement for Germany as a research hub. The initiative is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and is being carried out in the current project phase by the German Academic Exchange Service, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation), the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and the International Bureau/Office of the BMBF. These partner organisations advertise a broad spectrum of collaborative activities in Germany and abroad aiming at increasing the international visibility of top-class research in Germany, improving the potential for innovation, stimulating interest in mobility and encouraging collaboration.

Together with German research institutions, “Research in Germany” participates in international conferences and career fairs to provide information for international researchers on research and funding opportunities in Germany. Within Germany, “Research in Germany” enables experts to exchange ideas and transfer knowledge to support them in their own international research marketing and promote joint international appearances.

Furthermore, the initiative increasingly aims to include German research institutions and associations as well as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in these activities. Within the initiative’s framework, new targeted event formats and informational material will be tested and developed.

Focus areas of the DFG’s international research marketing activities:

  • Ideas Competition International Research Marketing and Community Prize to promote German universities and research institutions in pursuing their own research
    marketing activities
  • Joint appearances at international conferences to promote Germany as a research hub for various academic fields
  • Research marketing activities with the new Clusters of Excellence
  • Knowledge transfer: workshops and BMBF Forum “Research in Germany” for further training, exchanges and networking among experts in Germany
  • Information products geared towards specific disciplines and target groups

All promotional measures are intended as a service to the German research system.

Cooperation beyond individual universities and research institutions, e.g. with research in industry, is possible and explicitly desired, e.g. with research in industry.
