(27.01.15) A special edition of the bilingual journal Saldo was published at the end of December 2014, as the EU-Russia Year of Science drew to a close. This was the second issue since 2012 to be dedicated fully to science and the humanities and education in Russia and, prompted by current political developments, to take as its subject the role of intermediary assumed by the German representatives of science who live there.

(29.01.15) At the end of last year, the German House for Research and Innovation in Moscow (DWIH) presented the first research atlas for Russia. The "Atlas DWIH" project is a database for German-Russian cooperation in science and the humanities.

(27.02.15) The Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN) was 55 years old at the beginning of February. At the invitation of Vladimir Filippov, the former Russian Minister for Education and now the Rector of the University, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) took part in a conference on the internationalisation of universities.

(27.02.15) Under the agreement between the Russian Foundation for the Humanities (RGNF) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation), the RGNF has announced funding for joint German-Russian research projects in the area of humanities and social sciences for 2015.

(18.03.15) At the beginning of March, the first German-Russian International Research Training Group (IRTG 1956) in the humanities funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) was launched in Moscow. The formal inauguration was attended by a prominent delegation from Germany led by the Secretary General of the DFG, Dorothee Dzwonnek, and her counterpart at the DAAD, Dorothea Rüland. In addition to the group's German spokesperson, Elisabeth Cheauré, and 20 participating researchers from the University of Freiburg, Rector Hans Jochen Schiewer was also present at the ceremony at the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU).

(26.03.15) This month, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) participated in three panel discussions in Moscow on the reform of the Russian research landscape, the professional profiles of intercultural mediators and the role of research and education in current German-Russian dialogue. On the evening of 18 March, early career researchers from the University of Freiburg, members of the DFG-funded International Research Training Group IRTG 1956, hosted an event at the Russian State University for the Humanities (RSUH).

(27.03.15) At the last meeting of 2014, the responsible Grants Committee of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) made the decision to establish eight new Collaborative Research Centres (CRCs). Two of the eight new networks are so-called Transregios (TRR), spread across multiple research sites, including the first German-Russian CRC. TRR 160 between the Technical University of Dortmund and Russian research institutions sent out invitations to attend a press conference at St. Petersburg State University in March.

(01.04.15) At the start of this year Moscow State University (MSU), Russia's most famous university, celebrated its 260th anniversary. MSU was founded in 1755 on the recommendation of Mikhail Lomonosov, whose name it has borne since 1940. Today, with 40 000 students and 11 000 academic staff, it is the largest university in Russia and the most active in terms of research. To mark the anniversary, the rector of the university invited a large number of guests to share in the celebrations, including German partner universities and funding organisations such as the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation).

(24.06.15) At the beginning of June the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) and the Russian Foundation for the Humanities (RFH) held their first joint Leibniz Lecture in Russia. Historian Hartmut Leppin from the University of Frankfurt, the winner of this year's Leibniz Prize, addressed a captivated audience of around 120 on the theme of "Humility and Power" at an evening lecture in the antiquities collection of the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU).

(25.06.15) At the beginning of June the President of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG) paid a first visit to the Russian Science Foundation (RSF), which was established in 2014. During the meeting in Moscow the heads of the DFG and RSF signed a cooperation agreement enabling the joint funding of German-Russian projects in selected areas of mathematics and physics. The RSF is the third major funding organisation in Russia with which the DFG carries out joint project funding.

(26.06.15) At the beginning of June, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) held a ceremony to mark their 20-year partnership. The event was attended by DFG President Peter Strohschneider, who met with senior ministry and government representatives and the heads of Russian and German partner organisations of the DFG to discuss both the past and the future.

(29.09.15) In September the DAAD and the DFG held the fifth German-Russian Week of the Young Researcher under the umbrella of the German House for Research and Innovation (DWIH) in Moscow. Over 80 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers and professors presented their research approaches in discrete geometry at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT).

(29.09.15) In late September the DFG and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) inaugurated the first jointly funded Collaborative Research Centre. The DFG Secretary General, Dorothee Dzwonnek, the Rector of TU Dortmund, Ursula Gather, and CRC spokesperson Manfred Bayer were among those present at the ceremonial event.

(27.10.15) In mid-October, St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) invited Russian and German funding and research organisations to attend a bilateral fundraising workshop. The aim of the one-day seminar, in which other members of DWIH Moscow also participated on the initiative of the DFG along with the DAAD and the Helmholtz Association, was to consult on joint calls with Russian funding organisations such as the Russian Science Foundation (RSF) and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR).

(13.11.15) The second "Forum Naukogradov", the annual platform for the strategic development of Russian science cities, took place just outside Moscow in November. Eight of the thirteen cities with this special status are located in the region of Moscow Oblast. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) has been supporting research cooperations involving towns and cities such as Chernogolovka, Dubna, Pushchino, Troitsk and Zhukovsky for decades. It presented funding opportunities with its partner organisation the Russian Science Foundation (RSF).

(17.11.15) A series of events on the German-Russian collaboration in the field of biotechnology and the bioeconomy were held in mid-November. A delegation of 21 researchers from German universities and research centres in Aachen, Jülich, Munich and other locations travelled to the Pushchino Research Center in the region of Moscow Oblast. Their aim was to build on bilateral relations and networks in certain biological fields including innovation research and technology transfer between research and industry.

(19.11.15) A conference of Russia's leading universities funded in the "5 Top 100" programme took place between 18 and 20 November in the city of Moscow. The aim of the initiative by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation is for five Russian universities to feature in the top 100 of the most important international rankings by 2020. The current results of the 2015-2016 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings' Physical Sciences table were presented at the congress and seminars were provided for Russian higher education administrators.
