(23.03.17) On 7/8 March 2017, a workshop was held at the Heidelberg Center for Latin America in Santiago to intensify German-Chilean cooperation in nanoscience. The meeting was initiated by Dr. Oleg Prymak from the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) with the aim of strengthening scientific cooperation between the two countries in this field.

(20.04.17) In early April, the Free University of Berlin, the Max Planck Society Regional Office Baden-Württemberg and the German House for Research and Innovation São Paulo (DWIH-SP) held information workshops in São Paulo and Belo Horizonte (state of Minas Gerais) on the topic of submitting proposals for research funding. All key aspects were dealt with in the course of the event – from making contact with research institutions that might potentially carry out the project, through the selection of the most appropriate funding instrument, to putting together a project proposal.

(27.04.17) On 3 April, a new Maria Sibylla Merian research group was formally launched at a ceremony held in the Office of the Rector of the University of São Paulo (USP). Following its establishment in the Brazilian metropolis, the “Maria Sibylla Merian International Centre for Humanities and Social Sciences Conviviality in Unequal Societies: Perspectives from Latin America” will be funded for up to twelve years as part of the funding line from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for the development of scientific centres in Asia, Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean.

(01.06.17) The second and final funding period of the International Research Training Group ‘Zwischen Räumen – Entre Espacios’ (‘Between Spaces’) ends in around a year’s time, and the initiative has already produced some impressive results. The project, funded since 2009 by the DFG and its Mexican partner organisation CONACYT, was the focus of a symposium held at the Colegio de Mexico (COLMEX) in the Mexican capital.

(02.06.17) A community of some 400,000 people on an area of 2,815 km² – this could be a description of a German city, but in fact it refers to the largest university in Latin America, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México – UNAM). On 23 May, a DFG delegation which included Secretary General Dorothee Dzwonnek visited an important part of the UNAM main campus with the aim of strengthening relations between German researchers and the Mexican university.

(13.06.17) A university with 340,000 students and 40,000 academic staff, a long-standing collaboration with Mexico’s best training and research institution in the humanities and social sciences as well as a visit to a leading Mexican research and graduate institution made an impressive programme for DFG Secretary General Dorothee Dzwonnek’s visit to Mexico. During the multi-day visit at the end of May, together with Dr. Annette Schmidtmann, the head of the Scientific Affairs department at the DFG, she was able to form a picture of the Mexican research landscape.

(26.06.17) As part of the year of Germany in Mexico, a symposium on the subject of archaeology was organised in Mexico City, at which ongoing DFG-funded projects were presented in cooperation with Mexican researchers and the enormous potential of palaeontological research and the results of the successful bilateral cooperation were emphasised.

(10.07.17) On 30 May, the annual Brazil Day organised by the embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany was held in the Brazilian capital. Once again, this year’s guests included German diplomatic representatives and representatives of political foundations and a variety of institutions in the areas of science, culture, trade and industry. The motto for the event, which was also attended by the head of the DFG office in Latin America, Dr. Kathrin Winkler, was ‘Germany and Brazil: Partners in Globalisation’.

(25.07.17) Brazil’s research community gathered in Belo Horizonte from 16 to 22 July for the 69th annual meeting of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SPBC). A total of around 15,000 participants, including students, doctoral researchers, postdocs, professors and heads of research management in universities, research and funding institutions, came to the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).

(24.08.17) On 9 August, researchers and professors from the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) had the opportunity to learn more about the DFG’s work and activities in Brazil at the 3rd Colloquium for Applied Research. Kathrin Winkler, director of the DFG’s Latin America office, was invited to speak about the DFG and its funding programmes as part of a panel on ‘Funding Opportunities: Funds and Interests of International Agencies’. Addressing an audience of around 120, she spoke about cooperation with Brazilian partner organisations, funding opportunities for initiating collaborations between researchers in Germany and Brazil, and successful bilateral projects.

INCTs offering further possibilities for Brazilian-German scientific cooperation

The National Institutes of Science and Technology (INCTs) are a key strategic element in the Brazilian system of science, technology and innovation. The INCT programme aims at promoting the interaction with international groups of excellence in specific research areas. (18.09.17) The Research in Germany initiative provided information on research and cooperation opportunities in Germany during the 15th Brazilian Congress for International Law (Congresso Brasileiro de Direito Internacional – CBDI) in Florianópolis. Representatives of the DFG and the DAAD were in attendance on 30 and 31 August 2017 to provide interested parties with advice on research and funding opportunities in Germany.

(18.09.17) The eighth edition of the Brazil-Germany Symposium of Sustainable Development will be held from October 2 to 7, in Porto Alegre. The event takes place every two years, alternately in Brazil and Germany, and aims at providing scientific exchange between Brazilian and German researchers in the field of technological innovation and sustainability.

(28.09.17) German and Brazilian researchers in engineering and life sciences presented their research work at a workshop held on the campus of the Faculty of Medicine at São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Botucatu, in the state of São Paulo. Their projects are all based on the same question: how can imaging techniques support and improve the diagnosis and treatment of cancer? During the event, the DFG Office Latin America provided information about funding opportunities for bilateral research projects eligible for joint funding with Brazilian partner organisations.

(24.10.17) The eighth “German-Brazilian Symposium for Sustainable Development” was held from 2 to 7 October at the Catholic Papal University in the Federal State of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) in Porto Alegre. Around 250 researchers from both countries took part in the event, which takes place alternately in Brazil and Germany.

In 2015, the 163 member states of the UNO signed Agenda 2030, which contains 17 goals for the implementation of sustainable development by the year 2030.

(30.10.17) DFG President Peter Strohschneider’s visit to Colombia a year and a half ago has already produced concrete results in the form of a workshop devoted to cooperation between Germany and Antioquia – the first event of its kind. During a meeting with Strohschneider in February 2016, rectors and other university representatives from Antioquia showed great interest in furthering cooperation with German researchers. A workshop was organised to enable discussion and analysis of the potential for scientific cooperation, as well as familiarising participants with the funding structures offered by the DFG and the Colombian universities.

(10.11.17) The Belmont Forum, established in 2009 to provide scientific knowledge that can guide the transition to sustainability, is an international consortium comprising most of the world’s main research funding agencies, including the DFG. Its members come from more than 50 countries on all six continents. Representatives of the agencies that participate in the initiative met on November 6-10 in São Paulo at Fapesp, one of the DFG´s Brazilian partner organizations, to take stock of the progress achieved in the past year and agree on priorities for the research projects to be supported in 2018 and beyond.

(16.11.17) The ninth annual meeting of BRAGECRIM (the Brazilian-German Collaborative Research Initiative in Manufacturing Technology) was held in Salvador from 8 to 10 November 2017. BRAGECRIM, which is financed by the DFG and its Brazilian partner organisation CAPES, is one of the largest bilateral research initiatives which, since the beginning of 2009, has brought together over 300 researchers from various universities and non-university research institutions in both countries.

(21.11.17) In the first week of November, Brazilian funding agency CAPES, with which the German Research Foundation (DFG) has been cooperating since 1995, published a call for PRINT, the new internationalisation programme at Brazilian universities, with a view to establishing a new excellence programme.

(13.11.17) Exciting research projects, long-term cooperation and effective institutional partnerships: Argentina and Germany can look back on a lasting and fruitful relationship in scientific research and scholarship. During his nearly week-long visit to Argentina, DFG President Prof Dr Peter Strohschneider, accompanied by a delegation, was able to gain a comprehensive picture of the academic strength of German-Argentinian cooperation as well as its general situation. The visit in the second week of November took him to Buenos Aires, La Plata, Córdoba and Salta, where he met with many researchers and research policy makers.

(30.11.17) Following publication of the new internationalisation programme for Brazilian universities (PRINT) by the funding organisation CAPES, training and research institutions are now preparing for the application process. The announcement marks a first step towards the planned Excellence Programme in Brazil, designed to promote various aims including internationalisation. In view of the great interest in the German Excellence Initiative and the experience gathered by the DFG, on 17 November, the DFG Office Latin America and the University of São Paulo (USP) held a joint workshop entitled “Germany and the Academic Excellence Initiative”.

(01.12.17) The DFG and its partner organisation FAPESP have announced the projects approved under the joint call ‘Joint Workshops 2017’, which was published as part of the cooperation agreement between the two institutions. Ten proposals were approved in total, and the associated events will be held in both Germany and Brazil over the course of the next year.

(18.12.17) On 21 and 22 November, the second German-Argentinian workshop on marine science was held in Argentina’s capital. The initiative arose from a mutual interest among researchers in stepping up cooperation in the many different areas of the field. The event was financially supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Argentinian science ministry (MINCYT).

(22.12.17) The first symposium of the “Rede Brasil-Alemanha Internacionalização do Ensino Superior (Rebralint)” was held on 11 December at Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ). The Rebralint network consists of Brazilian alumni of German universities and was launched in 2017 with the aim of focussing greater attention on Germany as part of the current internationalisation efforts of Brazilian universities.
