(02.02.15) Between 14 and 19 December, DFG President Prof. Dr. Peter Strohschneider paid a visit to Brazil and Chile. The main purpose of the trip was to meet with federal research funding organisations CAPES and CNPq in Brasília, the research funding organisations for the federal states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, FAPERJ and FAPESP, and Chilean research funding organisation CONICYT in Santiago de Chile, as well as selected researchers from various universities and research institutes in both countries.
(26.03.15) On 17 and 18 March the IV German-Chilean Joint Committee Meeting on Education, Science and Technology Cooperation took place in Santiago de Chile. The DFG participated in this meeting and, together with CONICYT, led the working group "Instruments for Cooperation in Research". The conference was organised on the German side by the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) and on the Chilean side by MINEDUC (Ministry of Education) and CONICYT (research funding council).
(11.06.15) On 7 May 2015, the São Paulo office of Freie Universität Berlin and the Latin America liaison office of Technische Universität München organised their first workshop on postdoctoral research opportunities in Germany, with presentations on funding by organisations including the DFG's São Paulo office and the DAAD.
(12.06.15) Between 24 and 28 May 2015, DFG Secretary General Dorothee Dzwonnek and the head of the DFG's Department of Scientific Affairs, Dr. Annette Schmidtmann, paid a visit to Brazil and Argentina. The main purpose of the trip to Brazil was to hold meetings with federal research funding organisations CAPES and CNPq in Brasília and the research funding organisation of the state of São Paulo, FAPESP.
(24.06.15) The "Research in Germany" initiative will participate at the 9th IBRO World Congress on Neuroscience. For the first time the congress will take place in a Latin American country, at the Sulamérica Convention Center in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, expecting around 5.000 participants from all over the world.
(24.06.15) On the evening of 26 May 2015, around 50 people attended a formal dinner at the residence of the German Consul General Friedrich Däuble in São Paulo as a new director took over the reins at the DFG's Latin America office in São Paulo. In her address, DFG Secretary General Dorothee Dzwonnek, who visited a number of funding organisations in Brazil and Argentina during her trip, thanked Dr. Dietrich Halm, who has developed and led the DFG's office in Latin America in recent years, and introduced the new director Dr. Kathrin Winkler.
(31.07.15) On 7 - 11 July 2015 the DFG was represented at the 9th World Congress of the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) in Rio de Janeiro. This year's congress was organised by the Brazilian Society for Neuroscience and Behavior (SBNec) with the support of event management company MCI and took place at Sulamérica convention centre.
(13.08.15) A recipient of the Leibniz Prize has once again been invited to give Leibniz Lectures in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The Leibniz Prize is the most prestigious research funding prize in Germany and is awarded annually by the DFG. German virologist Frank Kirchhoff, a professor at Ulm University Medical Center, will give his presentation entitled “Why Was HIV-1 Able to Cause the AIDS Pandemic?” for his two Leibniz Lectures.
(18.08.15) The "Research in Germany" initiative will participate at the XXIV International Materials Research Congress, to be held in Cancun, Mexico. With an interdisciplinary programme, the meeting provides an interactive forum to discuss the advances in synthesis, characterization, properties, processing, applications, basic research trends, corrosion prevention, and more, all related to the area of materials science and engineering.
(11.09.15) The DFG Office Latin America has organised its third lecture series in Brazil, within the framework of which a recipient of the Leibniz Prize visited several locations, researchers and institutions to promote dialogue between Germany and Brazil. On the agenda for Professor Frank Kirchhoff, one of the HIV researchers at Ulm University Medical Center, on his visit to Brazil between 15 and 22 August 2015 were intensive discussions with researchers and research funding organisations in addition to delivering the obligatory Leibniz Lecture.
(11.09.15) As part of the “Research in Germany” initiative, delegates from the DFG attended the 35th Brazilian Congress of Soil Science (Congresso Brasileiro de Ciência do Solo) in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, between 3 and 7 August. The event was organised by the Brazilian Soil Science Society (SBCS) and held in the upland Natal Convention Center.There was a constant demand from qualified researchers for research and funding opportunities in Germany at the “Research in Germany” stand.
(18.09.15) Between 16 and 20 August 2015 the International Materials Research Congress was held in Cancun, Mexico. With an interdisciplinary programme, the event offered a discussion forum for topics in materials science such as synthesis, characterisation, properties, processes, applications, corrosion protection, trends in basic research and other relevant subjects. The congress was well attended with 1851 participants from 51 countries and included symposiums, plenary sessions and tutorials.
(07.10.15) „The 11th International Congress of Plant Molecular Biology will take place on 25 - 30 October in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil and will be jointly organised by Brazil and Argentina. The supporters of the event include the DFG's Brazilian and Argentinian partner organisations: CNPq, CAPES, FAPESP, MINCyT and CONICET. During the congress, speakers will present new findings in molecular biology and the scientific community will have the chance to participate in interdisciplinary discussion on how to tackle current challenges such as population growth and climate change. There will be a special focus on the dialogue between graduates and early career researchers and their established colleagues. The Research in Germany initiative will be present throughout the week with an information stand and will be holding an information event entitled "Research in Germany – Fellowships, Exchange and Collaboration Programmes"
(09.10.15) On Thursday, 8 October 2015 the results were published for the call DFG-FAPERJ-2014, which is intended to foster joint research and preparatory projects between researchers in Germany and the federal state of Rio de Janeiro. Out of a total of 53 submitted proposals, 24 were approved, a funding rate of 45% – the successful completion of the first step in the bilateral cooperation between the two funding agencies.
(16.10.15) Between 24 and 27 August 2015, the 44th annual meeting of the Brazilian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SBBq) – the most important scientific congress for biochemistry and molecular biology in Brazil – took place in Foz do Iguaçu. The conference was also the 23rd Congress of the International Union for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) and was enhanced by the presence of high-calibre international researchers.
(27.10.15) The seventh annual meeting of BRAGECRIM – the Brazilian-German Collaborative Research Initiative in Manufacturing Technology – took place from 13 to 15 October 2015 in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. After an informal meal the evening before, the first day started with the official opening at the Institute of Informatics at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Porto Alegre and words of welcome from the BRAGECRIM initiative’s current academic coordinators.
(20.11.15) The DFG was represented by the Research in Germany initiative at the 11th International Congress of Plant Molecular Biology in Foz do Iguaçú, which took place for the first time in Latin America. At the Research in Germany stand international visitors received information and advice in several languages, and during the information event "Research in Germany – Fellowships, Exchange and Collaboration Programs", Professor Dr. Rita Gross-Hardt and Professor Dr. Olaf Kruse both presented their funded research projects.
