Researchers often collaborate between different institutions, different cities and different federal states. This openness is a vital principle of research. However, strong individual locations are just as important to successful research as effective networks. The Funding Atlas 2015 reveals where focal areas have developed.

This picture is not uniform – a different 'research map' emerges for different research areas and funding providers. There is no centre that covers all disciplines and the whole of Germany; rather, the map is polycentric. Sometimes individual faculties at particular institutions stand out and sometimes strength results from diversity and a strong network. Especially in the metropolitan areas of Rhine-Ruhr, Rhine-Main, Berlin and Munich, there are many links between local universities and non-university research institutions. But collaborations also extend far beyond the boundaries of these areas.

Take a look at the research map and see where, in which subjects and research fields and with what support research in Germany is flourishing.
