The second Annual Global Meeting will be hosted jointly by Brazil and Germany on 27 – 29 May 2013 in Berlin

(28.05.13) Hosted jointly by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the National Council of Technological and Scientific Development (CNPq) of Brasil, the 2nd Annual Global Meeting of the Global Research Council (GRC) took place from 27 to 29 May 2013 at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Berlin, Germany. It brought together the heads of approximately 70 science and reserach councils from around the world as well as high-ranking guests from science and research, science administration and research policy.

Founded in 2012, the GRC is a virtual organization, dedicated to promoting the sharing of data and best practices for high-quality collaboration among funding agencies worldwide. As cooperation and collaboration can enhance the quality of science, avoid unnecessary duplication, provide economies of scale, and address issues that can only be solved by working together, heads of research funding agencies have a responsibility to meet these objectives on behalf of the research community. The purposes of the GRC are accordingly:

• To improve communication and cooperation among funding agencies by providing a forum for regular meetings of the Heads of Research Councils;
• To respond to opportunities and to address issues of common concern in the support of research and education;
• To be a resource for those institutions wishing to build a world-class research landscape; and
• To explore mechanisms that support the global science enterprise and the worldwide research community.

Following the Global Summit on Merit Review and the GRC inaugural meeting in Washington, DC in May 2012, the goal for this year’s annual meeting is to endorse a Statement of Principles on Research Integrity and to agree on an action plan for the implementation of open access to publications as the main paradigm of scientific communication in the following years.

The Annual Global Meeting 2014 will take place in Beijing hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) will co-organise the meeting.
