New Searchable Portal “GERiT”: Information on More Than 25,000 Research Institutes in Germany

DFG Web Portal “GERiT – German Research Institutions” Replaces Research Explorer

The web portal “GERiT – German Research Institutions” offered by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) contains information on more than 25,000 institutes at German universities and non-university research institutions in both German and English. It provides users all over the world with an efficient and flexible way to explore the German research landscape. GERiT replaces the previous web portal, Research Explorer.

As a new feature, GERiT provides statistical information on individual research institutions – in the case of universities, for example, the number of faculties, institutes, students and professors. For many universities GERiT also provides a link to the institution’s own careers portal. In partnership with the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK), which maintains the Higher Education Compass, users can see whether a given faculty offers doctoral programmes. If so, a link to the Higher Education Compass gives access to all the relevant information about earning a doctorate. A link to the DFG Funding Atlas also provides an overview of an institution’s core research areas. The search results can be viewed as a list or an interactive map, with the option of further narrowing down the search criteria. Each institution’s entry now also features a location map for finding your way there.

With GERiT, as was the case with the Research Explorer, the DFG is helping to make the core dataset on research activities more systematic and standardised in line with the recommendations published by the German Council of Science and Humanities in 2016. The purpose of the Research Core Dataset is to establish standards for data-based research reporting.

GERiT is linked to research-in-germany.org, the web portal managed by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to promote Germany as a place of research internationally and reach as many interested students and researchers as possible.
