Purpose
The von Kaven Prize is awarded to mathematicians working in the European Union in recognition of outstanding scientific and academic achievements. This prize is usually awarded to the previous year's top recipient within the Heisenberg programme in the field of mathematics, unless other outstanding nominations are received.
The von Kaven Research Award is granted as a fellowship or as support for research in the field of instrumental mathematics.
Number and Value of Awards
The von Kaven Prize is financed by the von Kaven Foundation, established by mathematician Herbert von Kaven and administered by the DFG. From the endowed funds, an annual amount, currently €15,000, is made available for one personal award (two-thirds of the amount) and one research award (one-third of the amount).
Nominations
Nominations for the von Kaven Prize may be made by members of the mathematics review board, its previous chairs, and other DFG committee members in the field of mathematics (such as senators and members of senate committee working in the field of mathematics). It is not possible to apply for the von Kaven Prize directly.
Persons who meet the general eligibility criteria stipulated by the DFG within the individual grants programme may apply for the von Kaven Research Award.

Selection of Prizewinners
In accordance with the foundation's statutes, funding decisions for the von Kaven Prize and funding recommendations for the von Kaven Research Award in instrumental mathematics will be made by the DFG's mathematics review board at its annual plenary meeting, taking into consideration recommendations made by the benefactor for both funding instruments.
