Bernd Rendel Prize in Geoscience

Type of Prize

Normally an annual personal award with the prize money earmarked for scientific purposes.

Purpose

The prize is awarded to young geoscientists who have graduated, but do not yet hold a doctorate, and who have demonstrated great potential in their scientific career. The award must be used for scientific purposes, e.g. enabling prizewinners to attend international conferences and congresses.

Number and Value of Awards

The prize is funded by the proceeds from the Bernd Rendel Foundation, which is administered by the Donors' Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany. About four prizes are awarded, depending on the foundation’s income.

Selection Criteria

Researchers from natural-science oriented fields in geoscience are eligible to receive the prize; researchers from humanities-oriented branches of geography are not eligible. Selection criteria include the quality and originality of previous research work or work in progress. The nominees’ future career plans and statements on the intended use of the prize money are also key selection criteria. Prizewinners are selected by the DFG’s Executive Board on the basis of recommendations put forward by a selection committee appointed by the DFG.

The prize is announced publicly, together with the deadline for submission of nominations. Nominations may be submitted either by the researchers themselves, or by any researcher or academic working in a closely related field.
