Name of Prize

The Ursula M. Händel Animal Welfare Prize

Type of Prize

Personal prize bestowed annually or biennially.

Purpose

The prize is awarded to scientists who are considered to have made exemplary and sustained efforts to improve the welfare of animals in research, or whose planned future research is likely to do so. If their work makes a significant contribution to the three R's of reduction, refinement, and replacement of animals in research and meets the requirements of ethical responsibility then the work may also include experiments on animals.

Number and Value of Awards

One or more prizes worth a minimum of €25,000 Funding for the prize was donated by Ms. Ursula M. Händel.

Selection of Prizewinners

Prizewinners are selected by a selection committee appointed by the President of the DFG on the basis of reviewed documents.

Nomination Deadlines

The prize is announced publicly, together with the deadline for submission of nominations.
