Electronic Publications in Science
Lines of Action
As part of the Digital Information Initiative, the DFG offers supplementary funding opportunities in the following areas:
Line 9: Networked Repositories for Digital Open Access Publications
The DFG advocates unrestricted access to the results of all publicly funded research (open access). These results should be made accessible via the internet, free of charge and without technical restrictions. Easy access to electronic publications requires the setup and expansion of a system of repositories networked across regions and subject areas. Its architecture should support the repositories’ integration into the European and international scientific context and ensure the long-term availability of digital publications.
Line 10: Open Access / “Cream of Science” for Germany
On 22 October 2003 the DFG signed the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities, thereby demonstrating its efforts to support the advancement of science by calling for easily accessible and freely available electronic publications. The “Leibniz-Publik” project was approved in March 2009 with the aim of establishing a freely accessible, internet-based collection of high-quality scientific publications comparable with the Dutch “Cream of Science” project.
Line 11: Long-Term Preservation of Digital Publications
As a pragmatic archiving measure, the DFG favours the implementation of comprehensive LOCKSS systems to ensure the digital availability of electronic documents. As part of a round-table discussion, the technology and functions of various different long-term archiving systems (LOCKSS, Portico, Kopal, E-Depot) were examined and compared. The results of this assessment have been published by Michael Seadle and Elke Greifeneder:
The DFG currently funds the following long-term preservation projects:
- Cooperative Long-Term Archiving for Scientific Locations (http://kolawiss.uni-goettingen.de/)
- The Development of Business and Organisation Models for Long-Term Archiving of Digitial Objects from DFG-Funded Digitisation Projects (www.bsb-muenchen.de/Entwicklung-von-Geschaefts-un.2380.0.html)
- The Expansion of the Bibliothekarischen Archivierungs- und Bereitstellungssystem (BABS) into a Reliable and Scalable Long-Term Digital Archive (www.lrz-muenchen.de/projekte/langzeitarchivierung/#babs2)
- Cooperative Long-Term Archiving of Educational Scientific Resources within the Kopal Framework / LZA Pädagogik (www.dipf.de/projekte/...)
The Organisational and Technical Further Development of the kopal Solution into an Integrated Service for the Temporary Long-Term Archiving of Digital Information (DP4lib)
