Temporary Positions for Principal Investigators

At its meeting on 25 October 2007, the DFG’s Joint Committee resolved to do away with the deadline stating that proposals may only be submitted from applicants within the first six years following receipt of their doctorate.

Applicants are thus able to submit proposals for a temporary position in conjunction with a proposal for a research grant in Germany (cf. DFG form 1.02e). Generally, such funding will be based on the BAT IIa / BAT-O IIa or TVÖD or TV-L salary scale. The terms and conditions for research grants apply. Researchers from non-university institutions are required to participate in joint projects with their university partners, as stated in the research grant guidelines. Exceptions may be made for young researchers at non-university institutions who have received their doctorates in the preceding six years.

Since May 2006 it has also been possible for DFG-funded project leaders and staff to take up this funding, which serves to promote knowledge transfer between science and industry, not only in an academic but also an industrial setting.

Statement to be given by the host institution

The proposal must be accompanied by a statement from the host institution in which it commits itself to taking on employer responsibilities for the term of the approved funding and, in cooperation with the funding recipient, for guaranteeing that the framework for the successful completion of the project is in place.

Admissibility of Changes to the Sample Text

The DFG emphasises the fact that statements in which the wording varies greatly from the template, particularly in its main points, cannot be accepted. This applies especially in cases in which the host institution has expressed reservations.

Two exceptions may be made:

1) If the host institution includes the sentence: "This statement is valid internally between the host institution and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. It serves a preparatory role in the decision-making process."

and/or

2) If the host institution deletes the last sentence: "The host institution has assessed whether the researcher can be employed on a fixed-term contract."

The statement must be signed by an organisational unit entitled to make binding statements of employment. As a rule, this will be the personnel department or the vice chancellor or registrar.
