Name of Funding Instrument

Priority Programmes

Purpose

To advance knowledge in an emerging field of research through collaborative networked support over several locations

Priority Programmes are characterised by their

 

  • enhanced quality of research through the use of new methods and forms of collaboration in emerging fields
  • added value through interdisciplinary cooperation
  • networking

 

Eligibility Requirements

Researchers from all disciplines who work at research institutions in Germany (not including those institutes which only pursue commercial purposes)

 

Proposal Requirements

  • Novelty of the proposed project both in Germany and in an international context
  • Clear short- and medium-term objectives
  • Synergy: Concept and resources to facilitate collaboration
  • Qualifications of the coordinator
  • Measures to promote young researchers
  • International involvement and visibility
  • Placement within the context of other funding activities

Type and Extent of Funding

As a rule, funding is available for up to 30 individual projects.

Funding Duration

As a rule, a period of six years, which is divided into several funding periods

 

Proposal Deadlines

Establishment proposals must be submitted no later than October 15 of a given year.

Time to Decision

Senate selection meetings are held in May of each year for decision on the establishment of new programmes in the following year.

Additional Information

New Submission Deadline

Effective 2012, all proposals to establish Priority Programmes must be submitted electronically to the DFG Head Office by October 15 (instead of the previous November 15 deadline).
