Cooperation with Africa

This page provides an overview of the opportunities available for cooperating with researchers and institutions in Africa.

Cooperation with Developing Countries

All the DFG’s funding programmes enable researchers to cooperate with their counterparts outside Germany. If partners from developing countries are involved in a project, the DFG offers the following additional funding opportunities:

TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme

Every year the DFG and the World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS), a 'programme unit' within UNESCO, jointly fund 30 early career researchers from sub-Saharan Africa to go on a three-month research visit to a research institution in Germany. Researchers working in any discipline can apply for this fellowship up to five years after conferring their doctorate provided that they hold a research position at an African institution.

Initiation of Bilateral Cooperation

The DFG facilitates the establishment and maintenance of collaborative relationships with researchers in Africa. Information on funding opportunities is available below:

Further Information

The fight against fatal infectious diseases requires research. There are still many unanswered questions concerning bacteria, viruses and parasites – and there is a lack of effective medication. In the DFG's "Africa Initiative", teams made up of African and German researchers are addressing these questions. This dossier provides insight into topics, projects and partners.
