Third Renewal of the Cooperation Agreement

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) is pleased to announce the third renewal of its cooperation agreement with the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). Both organisations maintain an active and long-standing collaboration. On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of their cooperation agreement, DFG and FAPESP would like to call attention to the various joint funding opportunities for research collaboration that are available for German scientists and scientists of the State of São Paulo in Brazil.

The joint proposal submission possibilities follow a Standing Open Procedure, where joint proposals maybe submitted at any time in all scientific fields between Brazilian and German researchers.

Professor Dr. Katja Becker, President of the DFG, Professor Dr. Marco Antonio Zago, President of the FAPESP, and Professor Luiz Eugênio Mello, Scientific Director of the FAPESP, highlighted the active cooperation between both organisations during a meeting on 15 September. They emphasised that international cooperation is becoming increasingly important and therefore agreed to renew their excellent partnership and to continue fostering German-Brazilian science cooperation.

“Looking back over the past 15 years, it is important for me to stress that FAPESP is our central partner organisation in Brazil. I am saying this not only because of the successful joint funding programmes, which we are running since many years. I am also saying this with regard to our similar awareness of topics such as the importance of knowledge-driven research. It is good to know that we have with FAPESP a strong partner that advocates for the independency of science”, emphasised Professor Becker.

Professor Zago highlighted the common interest in topics as for example the quality and integrity of research, also with regard to the involvement of FAPESP and DFG in the Global Research Council. He stressed that FAPESP looks forward to deepening the exchange between both institutions on these issues. According to themes such as quality oriented review and publication processes, Professor Mello suggested to intensify the dialogue between DFG and FAPESP.

In 2022, DFG and FAPESP plan a joint scientific event in São Paulo, in order to commemorate the 15 years of successful partnership and the 10th anniversary of the DFG-Office in São Paulo, which is a supporter of the German Centre for Research and Innovation (DWIH), São Paulo.

The state of São Paulo, with about 40 million inhabitants, is one of the strongest economic and scientific locations in Brazil; about 50 percent of Brazil’s scientific output is generated in the state of São Paulo. FAPESP has by far the largest funding budget within the 27 Brazilian Federal states. In addition to their competitive funding budgets, DFG and FAPESP also share a very similar funding philosophy and funding programmes. As at the DFG, almost all FAPESP programmes run on a continuous basis and range from fellowships and individual projects to research groups and research centres.
