Research does not stop at national boundaries. This is why international cooperation is not only a necessary aspect of research, but also of its funding. Europe is growing together to form a new research area. As one of the major research funding organisations in Europe, the DFG is actively involved in this process.
The fight against fatal infectious diseases requires research. There are still many unanswered questions concerning bacteria, viruses and parasites – and there is a lack of effective medication. In the DFG's "Africa Initiative", teams made up of African and German researchers are addressing these questions.
