In order to intensify and further develop the fostering of international cooperation, the DFG has also established a presence in regions which, from a research policy point of view, are of particular significance. In 2000 the DFG and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) opened the joint Sino-German Center for Research Promotion in Beijing, which serves to promote scientific cooperation in basic research between the two countries. Its key responsibilities include providing information, especially on suitable partners for research cooperation, as well as organising scientific workshops which aim to initiate new joint research projects.

In view of the fact that the USA continues to exert the strongest attraction on scientists from Germany, the DFG opened a liaison office in North America in 2002 (first offce: Washington, D.C.; additional office since 2007: New York City). A key focus for the activities of this office lies in providing advice for the numerous DFG fellows in the USA, also with regard to their various options for returning to Germany. Additionally, the office is dedicated to developing cooperation with the various partner organisations in the USA, as well as providing information on opportunities for cooperation, primarily within the framework of DFG funding activities. Other DFG offices have been established since then, with similar missions: Moscow in 2003, New Delhi in 2006, and Tokyo in 2009.
