von Kaven Awards
The von Kaven Foundation was established in December 2004 by its benefactor, Mr. Herbert von Kaven (Detmold), and the DFG's Executive Board. It is an unincorporated association, administered by the DFG.
The purpose of the foundation is to advance mathematics by granting a von Kaven Prize in mathematics and providing funding for research in instrumental mathematics. The annual award, which is currently €15,000, is divided into two parts: two-thirds of the amount is granted as a personal honorary award, the von Kaven Prize, and one-third to promote research in instrumental mathematics, the von Kaven Research Award.
The von Kaven Prize in mathematics should be awarded annually to mathematicians working in the EU for outstanding research and academic achievements. In accordance with the benefactor's wishes, research on axiomatic set theory cannot be considered. The von Kaven Prize is awarded on the basis of nominations; it is not possible to apply directly for this prize.
The von Kaven Research Award is granted to mathematicians either as a fellowship or in support of research projects in instrumental mathematics. Persons wishing to apply for this award must meet the general eligibility criteria stipulated by the DFG within the individual grants programme.
In accordance with the foundation's statutes, funding decisions for the von Kaven Prize and funding recommendations for the von Kaven Research Award in instrumental mathematics will be made by the DFG's mathematics review board at its annual plenary meeting, taking into consideration recommendations made by the benefactor for both funding instruments. Nominations for the von Kaven Prize may be made by members of the mathematics review board, its previous chairs, and other DFG committee members in the field of mathematics (such as senators and members of senate committees working in the field of mathematics).
