Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Department of Science & Technology (DST) Programme

Since the beginning of Indian-German cooperation in science, research and technology, a series of special agreements have been signed between German and Indian research institutions to initiate and implement joint research projects and promote the exchange of researchers. For example, on 30 October 2004 the Indian Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the DFG signed an agreement to promote scientific cooperation between India and Germany, through seminars and workshops, and the exchange of early career researchers and specialists. The agreement is designed to encourage greater collaboration between the DST and the DFG in all areas of basic research.

In particular, this collaboration is intended to support the following bilateral activities:

  • Joint research projects involving researchers from both countries
  • Bilateral seminars, symposia and other scientific conferences
  • Short visits, by invitation, by researchers to enable them to use the facilities of leading research institutions in the respective country
  • Visits by young Indian researchers to leading German research institutions, for a maximum of one week, following their participation in the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (participant selection and travel expenses are handled by the DST while the DFG pays for their stay in Germany)
  • Visits to finalise the details of research projects and seminars in the final phase (max. 2 weeks) project-specific consultative and research visits to allow colleagues from both countries working on similar projects to exchange ideas (max. 3 months)
  • Other, individually agreed individual projects
