Partner Organisations Worldwide

The DFG maintains relationships with partner organisations in many countries around the world.

China

The DFG's first cooperation agreements in China were signed in 1981 with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and the Ministry of Education (MoE). In 1988 the DFG also entered into an agreement with the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). The NSFC is the leading institution in China for the funding of basic research in the natural sciences, life sciences, engineering sciences and management sciences. The DFG has operated the Sino-German Center for Research Promotion in partnership with the NSFC since 2000.

In addition to the cooperation opportunities agreed in 1988 and 2004, since 2008 the NSFC and the DFG have issued calls for joint research proposals in the life sciences, natural sciences and engineering sciences, usually once a year. So far the DFG and NSFC have issued four bilateral calls. In 2010 and 2011 there were also two trilateral calls with the participation of the Academy of Finland.

In 2014 the two organisations signed the agreement on Small to Medium-Sized Cooperative Networks, which enables the joint submission of several individual proposals within the same wider topic.

Korea

A new framework agreement between the DFG and the NRF was signed in 2013. This agreement was subsequently supplemented by two annexes on agreed cooperation programmes such as the Joint Research Program and International Research Training Groups (IRTG). The annex "Joint Research Program" governs cooperation in the provision of individual grants. The NRF funds German-Korean projects through calls published once a year in Korea. Proposals can be submitted to the DFG at any time. The two organisations have the proposals reviewed in accordance with their own criteria and then reach agreement as to which proposals should be jointly funded. If a proposal is favourably reviewed then unilateral funding may also be offered. The annex "International Research Training Groups (IRTG)" governs the funding of German-Korean Research Training Groups.

The memorandum of understanding signed in 1987 enables scientific cooperation between the DFG and the National Science Council (NSC). When the NSC became the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) in March 2014, this agreement was carried on by MOST. In 2011 a memorandum of understanding was signed by the DFG and the NSC enabling the establishment of bilateral (international) Research Training Groups. This agreement is also being continued by MOST.
