(28.01.13) At the start of the year the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) invited former Russian visiting professors at German universities to a meeting at its Moscow office. It was an opportunity for these Mercator Fellows to hear the latest news from the DFG's Head Office and find out about planned activities in Russia, as Germany Year runs until mid-2013 and in autumn the DFG Office Russia/CIS will celebrate its 10th anniversary.

(27.02.13) As part of Russia's Germany Year, the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFFI) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) hosted a one-day workshop at the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences (RAN) in Moscow. The chosen theme was 'Prospects of German-Russian Scientific Cooperation in Clusters of Excellence (EXC) and Collaborative Research Centres (CRC)', and 120 researchers and academic administrators from both countries discussed opportunities for expanding joint research activities.

(10.06.13) On 6 June the Secretary General of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation), Dorothee Dzwonnek, welcomed guests to the DFG's traditional summer reception in Moscow. Addressing an audience of 250 guests including academics, politicians and members of the business community, she thanked the representatives of both countries for the successful collaboration of the past 12 months, which included the bilateral Year of Science and Russia's Germany Year.

(21.06.13) To mark the end of Germany Year in Russia, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) and the German House for Research and Innovation (DWIH) in Moscow held the second Leibniz Lecture in Russia. The lecture was made possible by the personal commitment of mathematician Günter Ziegler from the Free University of Berlin, who had already performed the same duty last year in New York and delivered a truly outstanding lecture.

(30.07.13) A symposium of the International Research Training Group (IRTG) funded by the DFG took place at the end of June at the Belozersky Institute of Physical and Chemical Biology of Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU). The spokespersons and early career researchers of IRTG Enzymes and Multienzyme Complexes acting on Nucleic Acids invited representatives of the DFG and RFFI to attend the presentation of the results of their ongoing research.

(30.09.13) From 23 to 27 September 2013, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) organised the third "German-Russian Week of the Young Researcher" under the umbrella of the German House for Research and Innovation (DWIH Moscow). More than 80 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers and professors from both countries came together at the State Technical University and in Akademgorodok in Novosibirsk to discuss their research approaches on the topic of "Aviation and Space".

(27.09.13) The beginning of September saw the publication of the annual special supplement to the bilingual newspaper Moskauer Deutsche Zeitung (MDZ, Moscow German News) focusing on German-Russian cooperation in the field of science and education. The sixth in this series of special editions offers German science and research funding organisations based in Moscow the opportunity to showcase current and future projects.

(28.10.13) On 16 October 2013, the DFG celebrated the tenth anniversary of its Russia/CIS liaison office in Moscow with a special event. Some 150 academics, politicians and other leading figures from both Germany and Russia, including DFG President Professor Peter Strohschneider, directors of academy institutes, university rectors and the German Ambassador to Russia, gathered at the State Historical Museum in Red Square, in the centre of the Russian capital.

(06.12.13) In October and November, the DFG, together with other German research and funding organisations, travelled in a delegation organised by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German House for Research and Innovation (DWIH) Moscow. The promotional visits to Stavropol, Krasnoyarsk and Yekaterinburg were designed to further cooperation with the region's new federal universities and the research centres of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

(06.01.14) The EU-Russia Year of Science 2014 was launched between 25 - 27 November 2013 with a series of events in Moscow. The guests at the official opening ceremony included Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets and the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn.

(06.01.14) On 9 December, German and Russian university rectors met in St. Petersburg under the aegis of the German House for Research and Innovation (DWIH). Six delegates from the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) travelled from Germany to attend the event, while representatives of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) were also in attendance for the DWIH.
