Scientific Collections Go Online

(5/18/12) Collections of scientific objects are used by researchers for their investigations, for comparison purposes, and as evidence to substantiate scientific findings. Often, however, information on the objects held in the collections is either not available in digital form, or not available in sufficient detail. Against this, the DFG has given scientific information service facilities which curate and archive research-relevant objects the opportunity to submit proposals as part of a call for proposals.

(05/16/12) Visit Research in Germany from August 19th through the 22nd in Philadelphia at booth 539 and sign up for the Research in Germany science lunch on Tuesday, August 21 from 12 to 2.30 pm.

2. USA Science & Engineering Festival

(05/01/12) An estimated 150,000 people participated in the 2. USA Science & Engineering Festival held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC from April 27-29, 2012. The Science Festival is the United States’ largest celebration of all things science & engineering and this year it featured over 3,000 hands-on activities and over 150 performances. The event was open to the public and inspired children of all ages to become scientists, innovators, and engineers. As part of the Research in Germany initiative, representatives from the University of Kiel, the German Research Foundation (DFG), the American Friends of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) participated for the first time in the festival and talked to children about science and research in Germany.

Experimental Biology 2012 in San Diego, California

(04/25/12) Approximately 14,000 attendees and exhibitors met in San Diego, CA, from April 21 through 25 for the Experimental Biology 2012. The annual meeting of scientists in the fields of anatomy, physiology, pathology, biochemistry, nutrition, and pharmacology is organized by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB). This year´s topic was Translating Science for Tomorrow´s Health.

Intellectual Fireworks

(04/12/12) Up to the last minute people were being registered, lists were being rewritten, RSVPs rejected and the security personnel informed. The event on April 2, 2012 was neither for the newest pop-band nor a high-level German politician! The star of the evening was Günter M. Ziegler, Professor for Mathematics at the Free University of Berlin, recipient of the 2001 Leibniz Prize and the 2008 Communicator Prize.

Understanding the Science Market in America

(02/29/12) Originally, the meeting between representatives of various German funding organizations in the US was to be small and was organized to discuss each organizations´ programs and their experiences with these programs. This initial idea turned into the first North American regional conference. Funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research as well as the German Embassy in Washington, DC, enabled the science liaison officers from the Consulate Generals in Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles and the German Embassy in Ottawa to attend the meeting as well.

Reckoning with the Risk of Catastrophe

(03/01/12) The DFG-NSF Research Conference will be held in Washington, DC, from 3–5 October 2012. This is the seventh research conference jointly supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), aimed at strengthening the research ties between the United States and Germany and fostering joint research activities.

(02/27/12) The event titled “Das ist doch keine Kunst!” Ten Images From Mathematics, which is hosted by the DFG in cooperation with the German Center for Research and Innovation, New York City will be held on April 2, 2012, 6.30 p.m. at the German House.

Excellence at the AAAS Annual Meeting in Vancouver

(02/27/12) The annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is widely known as the largest science festival in the world. From February 16-20, 2012, approximately 4000 participants and about 1000 media professionals gathered at AAAS, which also publishes the magazine “Science,” to present the newest developments in science, discuss science policy, and to address the question of how best to communicate science to the public.

The 16th European Career Fair in Boston

(01/30/12) “Europe will continue to invest in science and research,” “Europe is trying to gain the best scientists and researchers” – these were the two core messages with which Maire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, concluded her presentation at the conference in Boston titled “Destination Europe.” It was the first time the European Commission organized this one day conference in connection with the traditional European Career Fair.

2nd USA Science & Engineering Festival, Washington, DC

(01/11/12) The 2nd USA Science & Engineering Festival will inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers with an Expo in Washington DC on April 28-29, 2012. The Science Festival is the nation’s largest celebration of all things science & engineering and features over 2,000 hands-on activities and over 150 performances. For the first time, the DFG will participate in the festival with other German organizations as part of Research in Germany.

Experimental Biology 2012, San Diego, CA

(01/09/12) The upcoming Experimental Biology will take place from April 21 through April 25, 2012 at the San Diego Convention Center. The meeting is comprised of nearly 14,000 scientists and exhibitors representing six sponsoring societies and over 30 guest societies and the German Research Foundation will participate with an information booth, a science breakfast and more.
